Red meat and cancer

I have been hearing that eating a lot of red meat increases risk for cancer. Is this true?

And if so, would hot dogs made out of chicken/turkey be a healthier (as in, less likely to cause cancer) substitute for beef/pork hot dogs?

Personally, I don't think anything shoved into a casing is healthy. Just like I don't think anything in the lunchmeat category at a deli is healthy. Too much salt and mystery biproducts added.

Even apart from the human health aspects, I don't eat meat after reading the following New York Times article. It really opened my eyes to the huge problems with meat production.

Here's a recent article that gives some insight on the cancer/red meat connection:

Study Suggests Eating Less Red Meat and Processed Meat May Cut Chances of Getting Colon Cancer

And here's a blog post with some options for a healthier hot dog meal:

The Hot Dog and the Bun

No matter what you choose, make sure you're getting plenty of fruits, veggies and exercise!

After being diagnosed with colon cancer last year, one of the first things my friend was told to stop eating, immediately, was all processed meats. (Ditto for sugar sweetened drinks). btw, very few doctors will tell you this...Hospitals are completely clueless.

My friend?

She's in heaven, now...probably having a hot dog and beer...

Interesting article. Thanks for the link. I did read somewhere else that this study (actually, two) were flawed, though:

Of course, that is a blog, not the NIH, but still.....

Sigh.... who to believe....

As far as what doctors will tell you, I did ask a doctor who did a colonoscopy for me (came out negative) about red meat and he told me that the research wasn't positive, one way or the other....
