Iron is one of those heavy metals that you really REALLY need to talk to your doctor about before you take suppliments and vitamins to make up for it.
You can literally KILL yourself if you overdose on it and it doesn't take all that much. Your kidneys cannot handle overloads of it and neither can your liver.
First thing is to know that if you eat a healthy diet and get in at least two full servings of foods like raw spinach leaves or dried fruits like prunes or raisins , you would actually get ALL of the iron your body needs without supplimentation which is the absolute safest way to go because you won't od that way.
Red meats, prunes, raisins, artichokes, spinach, liver etc all high in iron. Google it and find out what else you can eat to make up for your shortfall.
It's always better to eat a healthy range of foods rather than try to rely on suppliments unless you absolutely cannot eat what you need to in order to stay healthy. There are also Ensure drinks out that have the added iron and they are excellant as meal replacements because of their nutritive values.
