Half a Cookie...

brunosbud posted:
Consider the following...If 3500 kcals equals 1 pound, then 50 lbs is 175,000 kcals. If a person averaged 5 lbs of weight gain/yr over 10 years (50 lbs, total), that would be the equivalent of approximately 50 kcals, overeaten, every day. Assuming one cookie equals 100 kcals, that would be eating just half a cookie, too much, everyday for 10 years...

That's the difference between being normal weight and being obese...half a cookie

Note: Another way to view 50 kcals/day is to walk an extra 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) per day...that can easily be done in 10-12 mins by most anyone, adult or child.

People who successfully lose weight, long term, understand this simple concept of "half of cookie". Real and lasting change comes from diligence, intelligence and persistence...one bite at a time.

I feel bad whenever I read, "Help me, please..." or, "Please, I've tried but nothing works..." or, "I've been a failure at weight loss my entire life..."

Its not that I question their sincerity; I question their expectations.

Because, in any endeavor, when goals are set too high, the odds for failure become, proportionately, high, too. And, as frustration builds with each futile attempt, the weight loss measures we employ become more desperate, more draconian and more dangerous, in nature. It is these unrealistic expectations that make weight loss an almost "no-win" scenario from the get-go.

Think about this for a moment...We get fat by eating half a cookie too much/day (50 kcals). So, what do the "geniuses" tell us to do?

Cut back consumption by 10 cookies!...These are the very same geniuses that say, "everything in moderation".

Note: Ten cookies or 1000 kcal reduction in consumption equates to "just" 2 lbs of weight loss per week. This would be considered an embarrassment compared to some of the goals I read each day. Most people "expect" 50 lbs of weight loss in far less time than that.

End of rant, here's the solution. "Intelligent" portion control.

What does that mean? It means, don't throw the baby out with the bath water. It means, what's wrong with eating one, maybe, two cookies, less? How many times does a person have to be accused of not knowing how to count (calories) before, they step back and say, "I know how to count! It's the math that's 'WHACK'!"

Something is whack, alright...Let's hope its just the "math".

I know that I fell into the patten of planning a "perfect" food and exercise day - if I slipped, well, that day was shot so I would go crazy eating an promise to start over again in the morning. As you can imagine, that didn't work too well!

Thanks for sharing your views here!
