Hi,

I am new to the group and I do not normally participate in online discussions. I have been trying to lose weight for many years now - 20+. I moved to MI in 1990 and my weight has increased approx 70#( office worker for 35 years). I finally joined the WebMD weight loss program this morning. I have been increasing my activity lately ( walking 1+ miles per day for the last month) and have lost 8# I an also unemployed for 1 yr today. I believe that part of the reason that I am still umemployed is my appearance. I am also 56 years old. I feel better since I began walking and have noticed less pain in my arthritic knees. Good luck to you all out there and I hope to be able to be a good source of encouragement to all.

Hi Kathy and welcome!

CONGRATS! You are doing great - going from sedentary to walking over a mile a day is fantastic.

I hope you stay here, participate in discussions and reach out for support when you need it.

I've seen small signs that the economy is picking up - 2 unemployed friends recently found work that they enjoy. I think improving your health can help you with that too.

Have a fantastic day!

Hi Kathy,
I too just joined today. I am also a office worker at a college. Over the last 4 years I have slowly gained 40 pounds. I have a hip problem so it is hard for me to exercise or do much walking besides the walking I have to do on a daily basis.
I am hypothyroidism and my doctor continues to decrease my thyroid medication and that also causes me to put on weight. I am hoping that with a support group I will be encouraged to stick with this lifestyle of eating.
Good luck and I am anxious to hear of any success stories or recipes that are helpful.

We have a great resource for healthy meal ideas here:

WebMD Food and Recipes

Do you have access to a pool? Exercise in the water might be a better option if you have a painful hip.

Be sure to communicate with your doctor about your weight gain - he might be able to refer you to a nutritionist who specializes in those with thyroid issues.

Welcome to you all!

I have been thin all of my life. I have had 9 children and never gained a pound...and actually up until last year have maintained a size '2' dress! However, after quitting smoking last year I've gained 26 pounds!!!! I just started running (jogging) everyday. I'm not sure if I've lost any weight yet as I do not own a scale, but you Kathy, have been an inspiratioon to me! I hope o lose 8 pounds as well. We have also changed our diet...we eat extremely healthy. But what has also helped is our portions. Instead of eating our own portions, my Fiance and I share our meals. Now, I find that half of anything makes me full and satisfied! I do believe we have re-set our appetite thermostats! Do you have any tips on what you've done to lose weight other than walking?

Hi mizhawk, WebMd has great communities that give you help and support for your weightloss journey. Plus professionals who browse the blogsites to answer questions.
The best place to start is here http://www.webmd.com/diet/food-fitness-planner/ filling out this planner and finding out what you need to do to eat right, get the suggested calories and the exercise that you need to do to attain your goals is right there. Then you go to the Eating and Diet site from the blue bar at top of WebMD page and select sites to look through. THEN when you are ready to start blogging with people on similar journeys, you clik Health A-Z at top bar, and then the last choice, communities. Under the diet choice, you start browsing the diff communities where people hang out and discuss their diets, exercise programs and share everything from random thoughts, to recipes to venting about the plateaus they've hit, Plus, of course their progress and achievements.
Hope this helps.
