Have you ever tired a diet pill? Would you consider taking one to help with your weight loss efforts?

JKhealth responded:
No, I would never consider taking a pill to "help" with my weight loss efforts. I would never consider surgery either, which has been proven a failure in the long term.

First, you can't be completely sure of what detrimental effects it may have on your overall health for possibly ten plus years down the road.

Second, people eat for lots of reasons other than strictly hunger.

JK - good points!

When I was struggling with weight, my food choices and intake were never dictated by a growling tummy!

Phentermine has worked for me but, that was only part of the equation. I started taking them in February 2012 and have lost 80lbs. I felt very bad when I first starting taking them - sweating, no concentration and feeling high. I used to cut them in half and start taking them at 11am. Also I would skip days. My doctor said I was not using it correctly but I continued to lose weight and I have not built up a big tolerance. My doctor had gastric bypass at the same time I started taking Phentermine and he is amazed at what I have done. I've stopped taking blood pressure meds. I have stopped taking diabetes meds. I have stopped taking cholesterol meds. I read a book called: "The Power Of Habit" and learned how to modify bad habits. I now exercise with my Bowflex and elliptical four to five times per week and I feel great. The major side effect to Phentermine is irritability. My family says I'm a bear to get along with. I didn't think about this side effect until my doctor asked me if this was happening to me. I have been mean to my whole family but, I see my biceps growing and my stomach getting rock hard and shrinking. I will never go back to being fat once I lose another 50lbs. I have changed completely and I could never go back just like I said I couldn't lose weight last year. I have had 20 years with this weight and now I'm in control. Phentermine will not work nor will gastric bypass. They are just crutches to aid in the healing. The true exercise to master is your mind. I don't believe in good luck. So "Good Health".

Aside from the phentermine, my experience has been similar to yours, Joe. But, I've learned through personal observation that a key to good health is the understanding of how destructive losing your temper can be. Ever meet people who have terrible eating habits, smoke and/or drink to excess, yet, live to a ripe old age?
Maintaining emotional self control is key, I think. They don't overreact to bad news...and, good news, too.

Great job on your fitness quest, Joe. Power on!

Hi Haylen,
I really hate to throw a wet blanket on the idea of a "miracle diet pill". Alot of people are so looking forward to it, and this scares me.
Anyone who does intend to try these, please, read ALL of the information about them. Get completely INFORMED first.
One of the main ingredients in these new pills is an anti Seizure medication. That means that it is first and foremost , a brain activity altering med. The doctors know without a shadow of a doubt what this drug will do for people who suffer seizures, but if you don't suffer from them, and you take these pills..... then what? What will this new "wonder pill" do to your brain ?
Remember now, that these are not supposed to be taken indefinitely, they are strictly SHORT TERM meds. Ok.
Also, remember that they only are helpful in losing 10% of your total body weight. TEN friggen percent! That's ALL. For most people that want, or even NEED to lose weight, that's probably , what, somewhere between 18 and 35 lbs.
Think about that will you?
If the average person who TRIES to lose weight healthfully, by eating better, healthier foods, and cutting serving portions AND ups their exercise by just a couple of short walks a day..... could lose about 6-8 lbs a month.
That's average, folks.
So, in approx. 3 to 6 months, you could lose the same amount of weight as those new diet pills would help you to lose. With no guarantees that you won't just gain it all back and thensome.
BUT.... IF you do it by eating more healthfully, by exercising and by changing your MINDSET, without the drugs, you will be LEARNING HOW TO KEEP IT OFF , FOREVER
So , the question is, are risks to your longterm brain function, your overall body health worth an average 23 lb weight loss?
THINK ABOUT IT
