Freeze 1/2 price bread. Most grocery stores print on line flyers and you can use these to plan your shopping. If you come across an exceptional deal, stock up and freeze what you can. Some stores will match the price of another store's advertised sales. If you don't know how to cook, learn how. There are all kinds of videos and cooking sites on the net. Dried beans, barley, brown rice, frozen fruits and veggies, eggs, the list goes on and on. Everything is a learning experience and I'm sure that with effort you will succeed with your goal!

This one is right on. Bread. NEVER refridgerate bread as it get very hard and stale because refridgeration dries things out very quickly. But if you freeze a loaf and , if living single, only bring out 1/2 a loaf and zip lock it, stored in cupboard or countertop. Cheaply purchased frozen breads can last a long time.
Same way with fruits and veggies. Slice zucchini, carrots, broccoli etc , and ziplock and freeze. DO NOT wash before freezing as the water will form ice crystals and cause freezer burn.
All berries can be frozen same way, don't wash, just ziplock and freeze or the skins will get tough and the fruit will be sour.
Bananas. If you have smoothies, peel, halve , ziplock and freeze. They last longer fozen and taste just as good.
Buy old brown bananas usually for less than half price and make banana breads, smoothies and such from those.
