22 And Obese

Hi, I'm a 22 year old girl, 5'4'' and 215 pounds. Over the past year and a half I've gained about 70 pounds. I know depression played a big role in my sudden weight gain, but I got help and am now happier then ever. I've struggled with my weight all of my life, but I could usually keep in in check. So here I ask, what can I do to help lose some of this weight?

I eat ok (not great, but fruits and grains are a big staple in my diet). I also go for an hour or so walk everyday. I used to eat "junk" food all the time, and NEVER exercised, but I still managed to keep a healthy weight, so I don't understand why I am having problems now.

I am also having weight related issues, such as fatigue, and my asthma is kicking in harder then ever (I can't even walk up a single flight of stairs without being extremely out of breath). So I'm just curious if there is anything I could be doing differently, any tips, someone could give me. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be eating more? Less? Different foods maybe?

It's great that you have resolved the issues that made you unhappy; now you can move forward.

It is also a very positive thing that you walk every day. Keep it up - it is an excellent habit, and even if the benefits may not be immediately visible, they are there.

The key to losing the extra weight is of course in what and how much you are eating.

Although it is good that you eat fruit and grains, I would say make vegetables (raw or cooked plainly) and lean protein (like egg-whites, fish, lean meat, skim dairy) your staples rather, adding a small amount of fruit, legumes, wholegrain products and healthy fats like olives, nuts, etc.

It would be good if you could determine how many calories you eat, as a starting point. Then you can calculate how much to cut down (there are many online calculators to show you how many calories you should eat to lose weight, for your height and weight).

Thanks for the tips Tomato!

I'll try eating more veggies (yuck! Haha.) and protein.

I've done the calorie counting thing. I have found that I tend to eat about 800-900 calories a day, without starving myself. I've tried eating more and I've tried eating less. Maybe it's just what I'm eating? I'll try your suggestions and see what happens. :)

Hi Kiddo tomato gave you great ideas what I would like to say is eat for nutrition and the more you switch to healthier food the better control you get over asthma ..
Become a label reader and if something has partially hydrogenated oils otherwise known as trans fats do not buy that item try to stay away from artificial sweeteners too.. and avoid high frucos corn syrup
an Orange a day can help too
after eating healthy for 3 years my life long asthma went totally away ... the 97 pounds of fat removal was a great side effect of my health plan that I called "Judys Nutrition Quest "

It's good to hear that you are now working towards a healthy lifestyle. I think the fatigue and difficulty of breathing that you are currently experiencing are related to your physical activity and not with food consumption. Your body is currently adjusting to a major shift, from being inactive to active. However, if the difficulty of breathing gets worse, best to see your doctor for proper treatment as well as consultation regarding weight control plans.
