Hi everyone:
My name is Sadie and I am 56 years young. I just ended a long term engagement. I am not happy with myself nor with my life. Depressed that i am not able to loose weight and maintain the loss. So I am starting again with a new attitude. I am ready to make changes for me and not for anyone else. I've allowed the depression to take over my life. But with that addressed medically I feel like I need to address my needs.
Any suggestions where to start. Let me say I have started warm water aerobics and its fun, but hard work. After that I'm open to any other suggestions. Note: I'm allergic to artificial sugars so that is out.
Thank you,
Sadie

Hi Sadie and welcome. I admire that you have changed your attitude despite your personal problems. That's a big step right there. Like Helene, I use fitday.com to log my food, but I try to stay at 1200 calories a day. We all are trying to be healthier and we are tweaking our programs all the time to what works best for us as individuals. I think most of us stay away from artificial anything. Whole grains, fresh veggies, no or very few white carbs and lean proteins are what most of us stick with. Great job on the exercise as well.

Welcome Sadie,
I am glad that you found this site. Keep coming back and you will find lots of encouragement and lots of advice. This is a great place to voice your frustrations, ask for advice, and announce your victories. We look at weight loss not as a diet but as a new healthy lifestyle. Please post often and we will walk with you on your journey to a new healthy you.

My advice right now is to take a good look at your present lifestyle. Pick one or maybe two things you are doing wrong and change them. (Perhaps remove that late night snack and go out for a walk daily.) Then as that becomes part of your normal lifestyle, make a couple other changes. Don't try to do everything all at once. That only leads to failure and quitting. That is why most diets fail. Tackle your problem in small steps that can be permanent.

A big key to success is to find support. Posting here will help you keep on track.

SADIE,

Hello and WELCOME to our world!!!

I am 66, so you, at 56, are ten years younger than me. You can do this. The impotant thing is to start! Do not let the slips back to old habits get you down....they will happen. Each day is a new day to get it right or more right.

Ending that engagement was a big step, too. Sometimes emotionally draining relationships prevet us with starting or living the lifestyle that is healthy. I went through a divorce after 30 yrs. of marriage. The last yrs. of that marriage were difficult and it was a new start for me after the divorce.

My suggestion is to join a support group for widows/divorced at a church. That is what I did. A long term engagement IS like a divorce when it ends. You need to be around people who are or have gone through this, too. This will help you with your depression.

Now for the weightloss: take it slow. Make changes you can stick with, like add more veggies and fresh fruits to meals and snacks. Drink 64 oz. water or tea. Walk 15 min. a day and add to it each week.

Let us know how you do. We are a very caring group.

Barb

P.S. I have been here since Jan., 2010 and still need to be here to stay and get back on track.

zozoJen,

What you say about the Portion Control being small is a fact that I struggle with daily. Truly conquering "portion distortion" is the key to maintaining weight control, especially in the starch and protein and carb departments. Going a bit over in the veggies maybe I can get away with, but it was only when I enforce portion control in the higher calorie foods that I keep my weight stable.

Sorry for the delay. i had a terrible reaction to an antibiotic and just finished six weeks of physical therapy in the water. I was unable to move my arms and my legs were sore and I was swollen all over. I have gained about 30 pounds from all the medications to counteract the reaction. I can move my arms much better now and i'm being weaned off the meds. So here we go again. I will order the books suggested on the 16th. I do appreciate the suggestions and am now ready to tackle my weight issue. I hope you haven't given up on me yet. Smile
Thanks again,
Sadie
