Got to learn how to beat boredom

I tell you what .. losing my job has really just thrown a curve ball at me and my journey .. I am fighting it .. but staying the same weight. Probably because I am at home more now and can pick. At work I had a limited supply of food that was all healthy and nutritious. Now I have my hubby's junk food to contend with. Boredom I am finding is playing a large roll in my bad habits trying to re-emerge. I really need to find a job and am trying .. they are hard to come by right now. I feel like i'm useless. You can only clean a house so much. I try not to go out to much so I don't burn too much gas. Got up last Wednesday to go to the gym .. had a flat tire.. busted that day. Friday I busted the back window out of my convertible.. you can't just go to a window shop to have it put in .. you have to go to an upholstry shop because it has to be sewn in. Had a yard sale Saturday. Cleaned up Sunday and spent time with hubby. Sat around till 2 pm yesterday putting all my left over yardsale stuff on craigslist and yardsale sights on FB while waiting for Enterprise to come pick me up so I could get a rental car since it decided to rain for 3 days. Hopefully my car will get fixed tomorrow, they gave me a minivan to drive around in... Got the insurance check today to get it fixed.

Oh my Goodness .. I can't stand this. What to do next?

OK .. thanks for letting me vent..

Norma, what is it exactly that you do? Are you an office manager or accountant or payroll person??? Have you checked with the local churches or your city govt? You could do part time at the library if they need help or local churches need office personnel, maybe you could find a spot that isn't normally advertised for.

Norma,
It does take time to get use to not running like a chicken without a head.
Take this time to figure out what is Norma all about. What you like to do. What makes you smile every morning.

Like Kim says try to find work in unknown territory, you would be surprised. Try volunteering you will make new contacts and they will know someone that know someone.
Here we are lucky if we loose your jobs we have unemployment insurance for 6 months and even paid training for work reinsertion.

Kim my official title was Manager/Event Coordinator .. I managed a small party rental store .. but I would help customers plan their weddings and events. I'm not sure what I want to do. I'm 51 years old and tired of trying to figure out where I am in life. I love what I do and probably just scared to try and branch out on my own. I don't have the funding or the credit to be able to buy a bunch of equipment so I would be dependent on other companies to get the equipment needed for the events. I am really particular about what the equipment should look like. I want it to be perfect (as it should be) customers are a very particular breed and they are paying for it they want it to be right. I know I am the worst customer. At the end of summer last year I had to subrent some wooden chairs from a friend of mine's store. The chairs were not up to my standard, they were banged up with chipped paint (just looked horrible) so I called and told him I was going to paint them for him .. and I did. I had 72 hours before delivery to my customer to paint and dry 200 chairs. They looked great when I was finished and the customer was totally satisfied with the product. So this is my dilemma. ughhhh

Thanks for the great ideas.

Helene,
Like I said in Kim's reply, I know what makes me smile I'm just scared.

We have unemployment also but I was a sub-contractor in this job so no unemployment taxes were being paid in. therefore, no unemployment for Norma.

I have already talked to the Y about volunteering to pay for my membership while I am unemployed. That is a help for me at least so that I can still keep going to the gym.

Norma,

Sounds like you are doing everything possible. Here's something I did (really outside the box for me). I got a job in a golf course (a real county one, not an elite one). I worked the "lunch" counter. I started at 6 a.m. Got the coffee going AND made the golfers fried egg sandwiches. Made alot in tips and was off work at 1 p.m. Who knew? Apparently this place would hire alot of high school girls who could not fry an egg!!!

I worked the weekends and was able to pay off credit cards on my small pay and tips.

BTW, I made a drink called "Arnie Palmer" which was half lemonade and half ice tea....always got a tip for that one (I think it made the guys think they were actually Arnie) LOL.

Norma, an event planner huh? Have you thought about maybe puttin in for a job as activities director at the local convelescent centers ? Your background would work in that too. 'Also, how about something like being a freelance vacation planner/scheduler for people too busy to make their own reservations? You could micromanage their vacations and set up their entire agenda without actually having to acquire anything up front, like the equipment. But with some internet checking you could give lists of places to see ,shows and restaurants plus prepurchase tickets if needed so that they could just go and have a good time.

That's a great idea for your membership, Norma. Glad they were able to accomodate you in that.
I'm sure something will break for you. Maybe one of our suggestions will spark interest and pan out in the long run.

Hang in there Norma. I don't have any brilliant ideas for you and neither will I stoop to the "when one door closes, another one opens" cliche. It's tough to be where you are right now. You are in my prayers and I admire the iniatives that you have taken with the yard sale, Craigslist, Y, etc. Speaks volumes about the type of person you are...remember that.

Hi Norma I had a hard time when I left my job and did the retirement thing it is a big adjustment when you are no longer employed .. hang in and try somethings you never had time for before while you are looking for work maybe there was some project you put off because lack of time ,,, It could be an opportunity to look into another type of work ...
good luck hugs Judy:)

Sorry to hear about your troubles. You've gotten some great advice and I hope it works. One thing you could do is clean houses. I know it would be hard but it could land you the job you wanted by knowing elite people because in this economy on those people have the money to pay for house cleaning. You could put an ad in the paper and see what happens. Just another suggestion that could lead to other things.
