Strange Days

Ok, now I'm gonna ask because I can't figure it out on my own. I'm walking my mile every day now and some evenings I go about 4 blocks up and back(total 8 straight) . I also try to "shop" with a cart about 3 days a week.
Here's the deal. For the last 4 days I cannot seem to get full. I eat almost constantly, though I try to aim for the healthy stuff, I've been craving salties too, which isn't normal for me. The salt cravings bug me , but I can handle them, what I'm concerned about is these all out hungries I'm getting. I still have been on the downward trend on the scale even through this binge time....
Question is , with all the walking now, could I have upped my metabolism?? Do I need to adjust my caloric intake for this?? Or should I just keep trying to aim for my suggested intake and just go with what my body thinks it needs right now?
Some days I'm hitting around 1350 calories just for the extra munching but I am so hungry right now.....This isn't like me, I have been able to stay right on target since the beginning of my journey. This has really thrown me for a loop here.

Ok Kim this has been a thing I had going and it still happens I sometimes wake up ravenous and it lasts all day .

I call that the hungry horrors..

It is Ok to eat a few calories over the goal 1 or 2 days a week this keeps your body guessing and does trigger metabolism ..
Have you figured out what amount of calories will maintain your goal weight ? with exercise my goal weight calories is 1800 I used that as a don;t go over line /// during my hungry horror days.
don;t worry about eating a bit extra as long as it doesn;t become a habit it is ok//
Hugs Judy:)

I haven't actually tried to stabalize yet, in order to maintain, but I would think somewhere between 1400-1600 calories would be about right, if I continued to exercise. I'm shorter than you are, only 5'4 so that's about right. But even then, I'm sure I'll have to make adjustments , like maybe slight cycling to stay on an even keel.

Hi Kim, Listen to Judy. I have those hungry days as well, but usually not 4 in a row. Are you getting enough protein? For some reason, if I overdue the protein on those days it helps me. Hope this helps. It will be hard to stay focused if you are ravenous all the time.

I have days like this, too! It's like I just can't eat enough. And it's not cravings; I am HUNGRY!

If I've learned anything over the last year, it's to listen to my body. I've learned to distinguish between hunger vs. cravings/munchies/thirst, etc. If I'm hungry, I eat!

When I start to get a couple days in a row like this, I know my body is trying to tell me something. So, I'll take a break from eating at a deficit. I eat at maintenance for a week or so to try and reset things. It works for me. Just be careful not to go overboard! The first time I went into maintenance, I felt like I could eat anything. Those extra few hundred calories make a big difference.

I had gas alot to begin with too, and was seriously irregular. I have found that the combination of salty/oily is one thing I have to avoid if I can. But I have pushed more water than the actual 64 and have upped my fiber intake with stuff like sprinkled all bran cereal on my pineapple chunks (in own juice) with Light and fit yogurt, plus eating 6-7 prunes a day has helped.
Things that I thought made me gassy before my journey began, like apples and raw veggies dont seem to trigger it now.
You are doing wonderfully. You will make your goal, if you stay focused and try some new foods along the way. It's like you are a new baby, you have all of those wonderful foods out there to try !

Thanks Debbie, yes, I always get my required proteins. I was thinking that too, because dense proteins like chicken breast usually fills me up better , for longer, but for some reason, nothing seemed to work.
I'm wondering about fiber. Maybe I still need to put even more dense fibers in... anyone got ideas for fiber products that won't throw me over on sugars or carbs or calories??

That's how it is. Absolute HUNGER. My stomach growls, I get "loopy" you know that slight dizzy feeling you feel if you are running on empty? I know its not my sugar levels because even though my bp is a bit high, my glucose was right on the money . Today has been a bit better though. I started off my day with my mile but came home to eat 1/2 a pita smeared with 2 Tblsp of peanut butter wrapped around a banana and 1 1/2 cups of Almond milk.
Then I had a cup of grapes and a couple of roast turkey slices wrapped around some chunks of apple and so far so good. I'm not hungry..... so maybe its a done deal.

Oh, I wanted to say, go get a cheapy food scale. Or even try to find one at a second hand store. These come in really handy if you can't eyeball your foods to determine your intake.
Remember a serving of meat is about the size and thickness of a hockey puck or deck of cards or 4-5 oz
a serving of something starchy like your corn or peas is about 1/2 cup
a serving of ice cream is a golf ball
just follow the guidelines on the back of the package of whatever for 1 serving
If its raw/fresh , buy sm to med sized veggies, then just look up the calories on the charting system to determine calories
Once you start to eat better, more healthy foods, these things will be like second nature.
It also helps to use smaller salad plates, toddler bowls , and toddler drink glasses to help understand actual serving sizes, Walmart has some very cool summer melamine plates out right now for under 2 dollars that are Sectioned. Use one small section for meat, one small section for your starch and the large one for salad/fresh fruit or raw veggies

Kim,

Thanks for sharing your "strange" days with hunger. I don't have that same issue. Ever since I started getting small amounts of lean protein and really veggie-up my meals and snacks, I do not get overly-hungry.

Now, I do get the "munchies" for the crunchy-spicey-somewhat salty snacks.

When I go home from dancing last night, it was after 11 p.m. and boy did I ever want to crunch and dip into ff sour cream w/salsa. Yes, it would be baked veggie chips and ff sour cream, but it was too late at night for any of this. I did the self-talk-thing and convinced me to NOT do it. I'm pretty sure if I did indulge, the scale would be up 2! Also, I was tired and this is my "weak" control time.

Lately, because of the heat and humidity, I am packing a cup of fruit to eat on my way when I walk (for 1 hr.), THEN, when I get back home I eat breakfast.

I hope your body finds an adjustment because this can get to be pretty frustrating....the hunger thing.

Let us know how it goes.

Barb

Happy Wednesday!

Hi Barb. I tried everything over those 4.5 days, even eating a bit before my am walk and drinking a bunch more water. Thank God, whatever it was, has slowly gone down. I'm gonna think of it as a sort of Pimple on my butt, lol. Because it SURELY WAS a pain in my behind but has gotten better, now, thank you very much....
I still lost about 1.5 lbs during that time so, I just guess my body changed without giving me advanced notice to "join the party" so I was just being pulled along with the tide and had to go with it.
All the walking is finally , FINALLY starting to show. Last night I caught a glimpse in the full length mirror, NO , I'm still not into standing nude in front of the mirror to check myself out, But last night with the glimpse, i went back for more. My legs are still very chunky but it is now a VISABLE reality that they are slimming down. Thank God for small favors, my cankles were one of the reasons I finally lept on the bandwagon for a lifestyle change.
Yeee HAAAH !
