Not trying new recipes

Tomato05 posted:
Lately I haven't tried any new recipes - I just make the same things, with variations on the theme (e.g. a different stir-fry sauce, vary some herbs, vary the vegetable types).

It's as if I've lost all interest in new recipes - I look at them and feel as if it is so much effort, going to buy all the ingredients and then following all the steps. In fact, I spend very little time cooking, and just make the quickest things possible.

My husband will be finishing his job overseas in a month; once he's home I will probably have to be more adventurous with the cooking again.

Do you try a lot of different recipes? I just can't find the motivation for them.

Haven't used recipes in a while--I love to try new things in my food, but don't really make anything that needs measuring or anything like that. I might try a new fruit in a fruit salad sometimes or try a new sauce but it's often variations on a theme. I think it's because it's summer and not really cooking weather.

Roh's probably right. With it being so hot right now, it's hard to think about labor intensive cooking.
I try to bring in one new recipe every month so that I don't get bored with my rotations. Yes, It's usually just a "variation on the theme" of my usual chicken breasts or tilapia or canned tuna , but I am afraid that if I eat everything the same way every time, then I'll get bored and it'll all start to taste like a bland all you can eat chinese buffet rather than a single chinese meal prepared just for me with the correct amounts of spices. I'm a recipe tinkerer anyhow so absolutely nothing I make ever EVER turns out exactly the same from one time to the next.
Plus since I fix a seperate meal for my bf nightly, I try to make different stuff for him too, or improve on something that he likes... I like to cook though, even in the heat.

Black bean soup with chicken breast and lots of hot peppers is really nice. Boil the heck out of the beans and precook the chicken breast and cut it up, boneless skinless of course, don't stint on the hot peppers in the beans and it is really good. It's good cold too, to keep in the fridge, or reheated. We use plenty of salt in ours but you could substitute herbs.

That sounds kinda like a "meated" version of a meatless black bean fajita recipe I have used. Mine has jalapenos and pineapple in it with the black beans. I liked that cold too. I'd forgotten about that recipe, lol. Yours sound good too and look! its a new month so i need a new recipe to try, lol...... thanks Roh

That black bean soup sounds like something I would like to try! I will add lots of onions too, which I like, and garlic and parsley.

A portion of that will have a lot of fiber and protein, which is excellent.

A lot of things I cook aren't recipe's but things I think that will go well together. I used to watch a lot of Food Network and I would take some of their ideas and tweak them to my liking.

One of my favorite things to do is walk around in international stores and try new things. Sauces, soups, etc, but it's really fun to wander around in produce and pick new mushrooms or vegetables or fruit to try. Sometimes it's not a good thing, other times I find a new favorite.

Roh, I agree completely! I love going to a random "specialty" store, or one like an Ocean State Job Lot that'll have tons of assorted sauces and whatnot, and just try one thing new per trip. It's how I discovered hot pepper jelly, in which I cook pork for a really delicious meat dish that isn't my usual lean ground beef or chicken.

In general, I try to do one new recipe a week. Because lately my diet has been essentially a liquid one, I've been making really at least one new smoothie a day. Like everyone else said, a lot of my cooking is variant cooking, different touches but not different meals. But the smoothies are an interesting challenge because I want to get as much of my "eating" done through them, and obviously want them as delicious as possible

My favorite so far has been two cups of almond milk, a cup of frozen strawberries, two stalks of boiled rhubarb, a banana,a tablespoon of peanut butter and some lettuce. It sounds weird, but everything goes together so well.

That sounds good, Roh. I do a similar thing although not a soup. Black beans and salsa heated up with some shredded rotisserie chicken. Yummy! Sometimes get the whole grain tortillas, but sometimes just eat it as is.
