    Looking for chia seeds

Today I went to the open market looking for chia seeds but they didn't know what I was talking about. My research from the internet says that Chia seeds grow here in Guatemala and were basic food for the early Mayan people. The Mayan called salvia hispanica "chia". I work with the Mayan villages. The open market is mainly Mayan. So why can't I find chia? I find lots of other seeds, nuts, and spices but no chia. Is it not here? Or do they have another name for it? Why change the name that they originally gave it? I can't order it down here, they can't ship it to me. I guess I don't incorporate chia into my diet. I guess I stick with moringa.

Marybeth, that is ironic that the seeds origniated in your area but you can't find them. They seem to be falling off the health food store shelves here in US.

Judy said she read about side effects, but I have only had good results with these. Like I said my DH is watching for those green sprouts to come out of my ears!

I really seem to be able to handle the portion control much better with the seeds making me feel full. I have added them to tomato juice, Greek yogurt and fruit and to soups.

BTW, Spark People has alot of recipes using these seeds as does www.skinnytaste.com and the yummylife.com.
