    Well, yesterday was an emotional roller coaster.
    I am only 22 years old and need a hip replacement...... I found out yesterday that the screws that i had put in 4 years ago are all busted along with other parts of my femur and hip.

    I am not allowed to do any sort of physical activity till at least October 16th. the 16th is when i will be going in a finding out what surgery i am going to have and also the recovery time. I am so worried and scared, i am to young to have hip problems.

    It looks like i am going to be on a very STRICT diet so i dont gain 100 pounds.

    Oh Mardee I am sad that is happening to you . I will keep you in my prayers and send healing thoughts your way
    I would be scared too ... You can remove weight with food choices alone while you are laid up ...
    choose foods carefully make the nutrition count it does help to eat clean and sound nutrition when going thru a healing process
    Good luck kiddo you are too young for these problems there is sometimes no sense it what happens to us

    Mardee, as a fellow hip injury sufferer, I really can relate to this. I am sorry that you are having to go through the replacement so young.
    Keep in mind that there are many many people out there as young and younger who have to go through it though, and lead extremely active lives post surgery. Anyone that has ever been in a serious enough accident that damages their hip, hips or pelvis would eventually be required to go through it, some , right away.
    Have they just discussed your post op diet or do you have a printout of what they have suggested? I'd be interested to know how it differs ,caloricly and nutritionally, from what we try to do here.

    Did the doctors tell you how your screws went do awry? How they broke? I thought everything was titanium now, and your originaly surgery wasn't so long ago that you should have to worry about it yet..... something is amis, me thinks.... This rings too much like when Stryker had their ball joints recalled for the screws coming out and causing so many people to have replacement surgeries for their replacements.

    If you are mad enough... I would suggest digging into finding out the companies names that made your screws. Your original surgeon would have that information and the numbers from each individual piece, as they have to be tracked and all medical implements and (I believe) fastening devices like screws , clamps, pins and plates all have these types of indicators too, which are all written down for tracking purposes in case of faulty materials.
    It may be worth your effort to find out, then google recalls on medical equipment or recent lawsuits occuring because of surgical screws and if yours fall into that same suit, you may have a case to consider.

    I feel bad for you though, and I want you to know, that you are surely in my thoughts and prayers .

    Hi Mardee,

    I'm so sorry that you have to go true this kind of trauma at such a young age. I hope you have a support system at home. You can always come on and scream your frustrations in the process of rehabilitation.
    So now you have at least a month till surgery, If I may suggest is to do your best to control your calories and try to loose weight in order to ease your rehab. Or at least maintain.

    Okay Mardee, we don't have to be a weight loss group! Just for YOU we are now a LEAN ON ME group. Come on whenever you want and moan, bitch, yell, do whatever you like and we'll be hear to listen and if you want it, to give you the best advice we have. Just think of us as 15 or so Mama's who want the best for you. Hang tough Sweetie. You will rock THIS challenge.

    I am so sorry about this Mardee. Try not to be strict as much as focused on vegetables and small to medium portions of chicken and other lean proteins to fill you up, and fat free dairy for your calcium (especially because you are female and young age of 22), and a favorite piece of fruit each day. Maybe an apple or grapefruit, or such. It's easy for me to say than it will be for you to do but its good idea to try. October is just around the corner... Huggs,

    WOW I'm so sorry about you having to go through another surgery. I'm sending lots of prayers your way and when you do have surgery for a speedy and painless recovery. We are all here for you so keep in touch or have someone log on for you to let us know how you are doing. HEY you can still do arm exercises right?     This all means so much to me!!! It is nice to know you have someone to lean on

    To answer some questions. They have not gone over my calorie intake or nutrition recommendations yet. but, with my last surgery i was only allowed 1200 Calories and 1500 calories on physical therapy days. I have to eat live culture yogurt every day to help fight infection and to help keep me "regular". Also, tons of fiber to help keep me "regular".

    Last time i had surgery, i kept to that diet and still gained 50-60 pounds in 4 months. So i have to change something this time around.

    Exercise, it is 100% no activity for 4-6 weeks, and then, the only thing for another 4-6 weeks in physical therapy which only includes stretching and strength training. Once again though, this is going off of my last surgery, this one is going to be more intense of a surgery so i am assuming that the time frames will me different as well. I am assuming maybe 6-8 weeks.

    And Kim, i had those thoughts exactly. My dad is going to help me look into all of the information as far as the screws being faulty. (yes they are titanium). The only other reason for them breaking like they did would be that my body is rejecting them, but then you would have to think that this should have happened a very long time ago if that is the case.

    And yes, i will still be coming on here regularly. Honestly, i have grown so close to everyone on here and i love you all very much

    But, i find all of this information out on October 16th. I will be sure to provide an update.

    Really Mardee, I think you'll be surprised with this surgery. Since it'll be a full hip replacement, your recovery time will be much less and your activity will probably be started right away....
    I am very surprised that they made you wait so long with the surgery after the screws.
    I had a major accident, have 17 screws and 3 plates to rebuild the "cup" of my left hip socket and repair my femur.... and I was transferred to rehab 3 days post op, doing rehab twice a day from the 4th day post op and was up and using a walker for short jaunts up the rehab aisles within a week, with wheelchair backup. and was back home and using a walker and cane after 19 days.
    What I'm saying is, don't let them "give you time" . It really is much easier and you heal faster with less downtime. It doesn't give you a chance to gain all that extra weight if they can get you up and moving.

    I thank God every day that I had a progressive specialist who believed in letting me do things at my own pace.
    I had my accident on Dec 5, was asked first day at rehab how long I thought it might take me to get ready to leave, and I said I'd be home by Christmas, and I was.
