    Wrist update

    ladylavender posted:
Hi, everyone. Sept. 25 I broke both radial and ulnar bones very close to my right wrist (am left-handed, thankfully). At the radial break, I had over 20 shattered pieces, and the ulnar bone's broken ends could not be placed ideally. Torn cartilage, ligaments, etc. The broken pieces are filling in, and bones are healing, which means I am in less pain. I am continuing occupational therapy, too.

One big problem is that a small bone close to the wrist (a carpal bone) shifted significantly when I fell, and that caused some other small bones to shift resulting in my wrist wanting to angle inward - in essence, the bones can't hold the wrist at a neutral position anymore, and I have to work on my muscles compensating. I still can't even make a fist or type with my right hand.

I am seeing a wrist surgeon specialist this Friday for a second opinion on options, whether to go for some sort of surgery or to continue to wait and see. Now that bones are healing, I may be looking at a plate/screws, realignment, possible wrist replacement, but some of those things mean losing a way to bend/flex wrist in a certain direction. Either way, I am off from work a minimum of 2 more months; with surgery, it will be longer.

Will have to apply for long-term disability. Yowza.

Currently still holding at 32-lb loss. Need to refocus so I can keep losing.

    Thanks for "listening."

Thank you, everyone. Your well wishes and kudos mean a lot to me.

Found out that my employer won't approve medical leave past 3/29. I am trying to trust God through all this, but I have a sinking feeling about my job. I waffle between peace/trust to panic and despair. On one level, I am curious to know how God will work out this mess. Hmmmm.

Saw the wrist/hand specialist Friday. I am scheduled for surgery on the 28th. He explained that I am not getting full function of my fingers because the wrist is angled inward and the tendons are stretched as far as they will go. In the surgery, he plans to shave off part of the bone that hasn't healed properly, add in some filler in other places ("Allograft"), and attach a plate. All of this should put my wrist in a more neutral position and provide finger function, but the trade off will be that I won't have any wrist movement again.

He also stated that recovery will take months. I have a lot of things to consider: Loss of employment, long-term disability insurance should help, SS disability perhaps, maybe unemployment, probably bankruptcy, possibly Vocational Rehab help down the road. A very shaky future....Just, so, soooo much to consider and work out. I think I am overwhelmed to the point of numbness at the moment. I will be trusting God through this; for one thing, God already knows the answers. I just need some time to process the latest development.

Thank you for listening and all your encouragement. It helps.

Oh Abby, what a lot to take in all at once . You need to sit with this for a few days and let your mind absorb it. Hopefully things will be clearer then.
