chiari and digestive problems pepcid alternative?

I was diagnosed with chiari and syringomyelia about five years ago. Since about then I have had digestive problems which I discovered somehow by trial and error can be controlled by taking about 20 mg pepcid / famidotine (used to be twice daily now needed only once thanks to radical no/low fat, sugar, oils diet to stop/reverse heart disease). If I do not take this medicine regularly, food comes up pre-digestion (somehow this breaks things down that are hard to digest) and I wake up in the middle of the night coughing like I am choking. Once I take the medication, I am fine. I have been checked regularly for cancers and have had approp procedures. My gastro specialist thinks this is fine, but since this is supposed to be a temporary medicine that I have been on for several years, I would like to find ways to further reduce and/or replace w/ natural methods. Also would appreciate any info/thoughts as to what might be going on
