esophageal discomfort and chest pain

I am going in for a upper gi because of a condition of burning in my esophagus. The pain is in the tube but also extends out into my chest plate where my muscle is tender to touch under my skin. I was wondering if this is a common condition? My doctor says because the nerves in the region are so connected it can present in this manner.
