Mother of 2 year old with GI issues we need help
An_250113 posted:
My son was born full term and started choking and gagging. He ended up admitted and got scoped this showed eosinophils and stomach ulcers. they also did an upper GI and told us he had reflux. they put him on a formula called elecare and we went home. He ended up with a feeding tube for being failure to thrive as he would not eat. He was scoped again at 5 months which showed inflammation and eosinophils again. He was placed on prednisone. At this time he was on elecare but also small amounts of baby cereal. His tube fell out and they did not put another one back in. Since being off the tube he would not take elecare by mouth so we went to a regular diet. He has been miserable. He is now 2 and has huge behavior issues along with screaming episodes where he is inconsolable. We just had allergy patch testing and he was positive for eggs, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas, pineapple. We have eliminated these foods from his already limited diet I feel as though no matter where we turn or what doctors we see no one listens to us. He was much happier tube fed and on elecare. Why does he still have no diagnosis!!! HELP!
calgal37 responded:
He may actually have a diagnosis even though none of the docs may have voiced it, called eosinophilic esophagitis or one of the other forms of eosinophilic disease. Please go to one of the sites such as and read up on the subject. Eosinophilic esophagitis is an 'allergy'/disease that causes swelling in the esophagus or stomach. Symptoms can vary and range from severe heartburn, difficulty swallowing to food impaction, nausea, vomiting and weight loss. That limited diet is going to be the cure. Seek out a doc that knows and understands eosinophilic disorders.

Thank you for the response. I have looked into Eosinophillic disorders and have asked about them at his appointments. I cannot get any clear answers. He has now been on the elimination diet for a little over 2 weeks and there has been no improvement. Despite the allergy testing it literally seems like no matter what he eats he is just miserable after. We have started to pay close attention to his behavior along with his irritability and crying and it seems to be 15-30 mins after eating. We tried giving him nothing but liquids over this past weekend just apple juice and water for a period of time one day and he was a completely different child. We have a GI appointment on Wed so we shall see what they say.
calgal37 replied to ashcic27's response:
You may have to find a specialist in the field of eosinophilic issues. Most GI's are good with 'run-of-the-mill' digestive issues, but with something that isn't seen very often, it's a very different story. You really need a doc that know's this issue inside-out. Check the eosinophilic boards and question other people who have children with this disorder. They will probably be able to point you in the right direction.
