Can seizure be from this??

I know a young lady in her early 20's who was diagnosed with epilepsy several years ago. She has admitted that she doesn't always take her medication and I know that drinks a lot and suspect she does some kind of drugs. She recently told me she fainted and hit her head pretty badly. Is it possible that her "fainting" episodes are from mixing drugs/alcohol with her epilepsy or epilepsy medication? Her parents are deceased and the church is thinking of paying a lot of money for even more testing than she's already had but I just wonder if that is the wrong avenue in light of her lifestyle behavior.

Hello smartin9, Welcome to Epland. I want to thank you for showing an interest in this girl's well-being. First, she has been diagnosed w/ Epilepsy & she needs to be seeing a neuro on a regular basis. Her consumption of alcohol, possibly drugs, missing medications, of course, is not a good thing. Her seizure threshold is lowered. This young lady (+ others concerned :) ) needs to learn more about her disorder & take it more seriously. I say "Go Ahead & get her back in to see a Neuro or epileptologist (seizure specialist usually found in teaching hospitals)" You can locate one using WebMD info and/or use the Weblinks for Epilepsy post above. The Epilepsy Foundation may have a support group or advocate in your area. If you contact them, They mite send someone to your church to teach you & others about Epilepsy & seizure 1st aid. www.epilepsyfoundation.org/ Their site can provide you w/ a lot more info, too. But, for now, the young lady needs to start a journal & ask witnesses what occurred B4, during & after an 'epiosde'. Fainting could have been caused by her 'bad habits'. She still needs tests! Possibly, psych help to help her cope. My prayers are w/ you & yours & of course, the young lady in question. I do hope she appreciates your concern & desire to help her. It will take TIME, PATIENCE & SUPPORT. But, if she follows DRs advice she will be OK. :) Good Luck. I do hope you keep us posted. God Bless Love Candi & family

First and foremost, the young lady should NOT be denied her E drugs. Doing so will cause her brain to kindle, and re-kindle repeatedly, causing more seizures--and causing more damage in the long run. When that happens, it becomes harder to find any kind of control, medication or otherwise (diet, therapy, surgery, VNS). THAT said, some of us do have a lower seizure threshold, period. Mix in alcohol, or even just aspirin (OTC meds, etc), and we can go off. Truly. Her "fainting" episodes may actually be another form of seizure--without a better description, I couldn't really tell you. There are over 40 different types of seizures, as I posted previously, some of them you lose consciousness, some you don't. She may have had a TONIC seizure.......which might fit in with what you're talking about. Follow this link for more information on the different types of seizures: www.epilepsy.com/EPILEPSY/TYPES_SEIZURES You also need to understand something else, though. DEPRESSION goes hand in hand with E(pilepsy). If she IS drinking/doing any drugs, it may be in order to deal with THAT. Something else to keep in mind: There are ELEVEN anti-epileptic drugs that are on the FDA's "Suicide Watch List". Check out the following link: www.coping-with-epilepsy.com/forums/f22/suicide-risk-11-epilepsy-drugs-2416/ I'm sure she could use some counseling, but JUDGMENT will not get her anywhere. That's something all of us E patients go through on a daily basis, and it is a royal pain in the arse. I do understand that the church is looking to shell out money, but TRY to put yourself in HER shoes for once... How would you feel knowing that you could seize at any time? How would you feel if you're depressed at the same time? How would you feel at that age if you had THOSE problems and NO PARENTS? Another couple of sites to check out besides epilepsy.com to understand what she is going through are: www.coping-with-epilepsy.com & communityforum.epilepsysupportgroup.com/ Hopefully they can help you, and possibly her, too. Much luck to you both. Meetz
