Not sure if this is where I need to be

A friend of mine thinks I have been having seizures but I don't know what a seizure is. Here is what happens:

I will be standing at the sink reaching for water, then all of a sudden I get this weird feeling in my brain and I have to sit down like now.

I always go to the bathroom and sit on the toilet bc I have raised safety bars. As soon as I sit down everything just pours out - I get numb all over I begin to sweat profusely I have to immediately remove everything, my heart beats so fast like 300 beats a minute.

I always go limp dizzy like - I do not feel right then my legs go completely stiff - these last about 10 mins and go away. After these episodes as I call them I do grab my glucose meter thinking I have high sugars or low sugars, but I am always 100.

2 days ago however the same thing happened but instead of going limp I must have passed out completely bc when I came too I was on the floor head first in the opposite direction I was sitting. This happened about 9pm and I finally got to bed at 11:30pm. My legs were so stiff I couldn't walk to bed I had to crawl.

Does this sound like a seizure? Who do I go to see for these episodes? I know you can not diagnose anyone I am just trying to make sense of this. They are happening at least once a month for about 4 months. I have not had any of these since Sept. last year. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Deb

Hello Deb,

There are a lot of reasons for your 'odd' episodes. I'm Not diagnosing you, but, the fact you didn't chew your tongue or hurt yourself are Important facts to consider. The other symptoms are puzzling. Not Typical. Although I have had similar experiences. But, I have to lay down in the tub to avoid passing out while on the throne. I refer to these as 'abdominal seizures'. And they are Real. I haven't passed out. I don't think. My legs are OK. But, IF it was seizure activity, some of our symptoms may be the same. Others may be 'unique' unto us. Same w/ Triggers (what makes these episodes occur) Foods/additives/beverages Can trigger them. They do not discriminate. Once a mth, every 2 mths. once a yr. There is no way to predict them. But, you can find the trigger's by keeping a Journal. Please, Read 'Journals' under Tips. The fact you have Diabetes is Important, also. But, your readings are 'norm'. Thank Goodness!

Start w/ your Primary Doc & rule out allergies to foods/additives. A colonoscopy could be done to rule out any possible problems of the colon. (They suggested that to me. ) Have him/her chek your Hormone levels, also. The fact they were once a mth, shows a pattern. So, that may be a possibility, too. Our Resources has Info on Catamenial Seizures. If all is Norm w/ tests: Ask your Dr for a referral to a Neurologist.

HUGS! I do hope you will Learn More about Epilepsy while you are here. We Need to Raise Public Awareness & you Could be One more who IS Aware. Plus, let us Know what ever the Drs determine. Wish you Luck & Prayers these episodes are Not seizure Related. One Day at a Time & Lots of Patience till all is said & done.

Love Candi

Thank you for responding, I can address a few of the items:

The reason I have to sit on the throne is bc I always get the runs with it. I have fallen from a standing position not fun so I know I have to sit fast.

The known allergies I avoid so no problem there.

I had a hysterectomy at 28 I'm 56 now so no monthly pattern there, that I know of. Just had my thyroid checked bc I do not have one and it is okay. Will be testing my testosterone levels this week.

I do have a Neurologist bc I have an Autonomic dysfunction caused by the Vagus Nerve in the brain. I will make an appt. with her thanks again. Deb

I just talked to a Neurologist and they think this is caused by my POTS. I will need to have the EEG to confirm to see if it was a seizure or my low blood pressure no clue at this point.

hi deb,

A sz is a brief eccesive discharge of brain electrical activity that changes how a person thinks, feels, sences, or behaves.

during a sz, teh regulatory systems that maintain the normal balance between stimultaing and dampaning of nerve cell activitybreak down.

Szs can cause an incredible range of effects, including pins and needles, halucenations, smell of buringing rubber, feces, urine, rising sensations or other stomach senstaions, buzzing sounds in the ear, abdominal sesnations, staring spells, loss of awareness, loss of consionsness, etc.

Epilepsy is a disorder where 2 or more szs are recurrrent or are unproked.

some triggers for szs are missed meds, crossing time zones, sleep deprivation, alchol use, drug abuse, menses, stress, OTC drugs, illness and fever or jsut fever alone, nutrional defencise, adn teh moon cycle.

hope that helped some.
