have a quick question for Sheldon. I have blood in my semen 1-2 months ago and I have went to see the doctor and he ask me not to worry about it. It will reoccur once every 2 -3 weeks. However, now I just see that I have 1-2 drops of blood on my underwear yesterday, not sure whether it is related to the blood in semen. But i didn't have any sex for pass few days. what should i do

It's not a rational assumption to think your kidneys are "giving up on you." You describe an uncommon and severe situation. You have identified that this is a urinary issue, not a reproductive issue, the thing is that these two systems share the same exit.

So, while you're mentally associating one with the other, they may have nothing to do with one another at all. Still, the situation is quite serious, and I expect that you are seeing a urologist this time. Until then, be careful with your body and don't aggravate the area.

I have been having i guess blood in my sperm for about 3 weeks now, The first time I noticed it wasn't all of my sperm, half was normal and half was just discolored. Now its to the point where it pretty much all is a reddish color. It doesn't hurt or anything though, I am just wondering what could cause this? And also I am a 21 year old who has been addicted to Heroin for almost 3 years now off and on, i have been injecting it for about a year and a half now, could this be causing it or have something to do with it?

counterso responded:
Yes, drug use could be related, but it may not be. You absolutely need to see a urologist NOW, not later, not next month, now. You're getting a literal red flag, and it would be a huge mistake to ignore it, especially since it has become persistent and worse. Be sure to tell the urologist about your drug use. They're not there to judge, just to assess your health and figure out what's wrong. Make an appointment today.

I have noticed blood in my sperm a couple times now, only very small amounts but I am only 18 years old, I was wondering what a prognosis may be without having to see a Urologist. This couldn't be from an STD, could it?

Hi Ramoncruz,

As you can see, this is not uncommon and it's good you saw your doctor about it. But if it is still continuing and/or escalating, return to your doctor and pursue answers. You may want to see a urologist to find out what's going on.

HI cruz I have had this happen too...went to the doctor; doctor said it was prostatitis I was worried sick about it..doctor gave me a perscription for an antibiotic took it for 7-10 days and it got better..a friend told me that he got it too and one doctor said one can get this from unprotected sex and oral sex...something you are just going to have to live with..my ordeal went away completely after 3 weeks..when the blood is starting to look a brownish color it is getting better; if your blood is bright red it is just starting it can go away on its own but the antibiotics help clear up the infection quicker...hope this helps

Same thing happened to me, my morning erections stopped I freaked and worried for 4-6 days went to the doctor he said it was prostatitis and gave me antibiotic and it cleared it up after taking the antibiotic 7-10 days, after 2 days started to get my morning erections back...another friend said the doctor said to him it can be caused by unprotected sex and or oral sex bacteria getting into your penis working its way down...and the doctor said it can happen again...hope this helps

Sheldon Marks, MD responded:
Blood in the semen is not a problem unless it is heavy and prolonged over time. It can come and go, and be anywhere from bright red to dark old blood to brownish to spotty. It is scary- that is a fact. But it is not a problem that means anything about fertility or cancer. If you are still worried, then see a urologist, get an exam, a PSA and a urine check.

If you still have it probably a basic work up is needed. Go back to your urologist and tell him /her that it is continuing and you want to be sure all is okay.
