Strange rainbow lines.

I have had several problems with these strange rainbows in my vision.
The first time it happened it went from 1 eye to the other starting as a small line then growing to a large spot it eventually went away after about 10-15 mins.
The second time it lasted maybe a few mins with just small lines here and there in my right eye only.
This third time it was a small spot at first growing to a large line that turned into a half circle in my right eye only then it slowly went away.
during all of these my vision also blurred a little but it all eventually went away.
Any ideas what could cause this? I am a fairly healthy 37 year old man I don't drink or do any type of drugs but I am a smoker, could this be realted?

Alan M Kozarsky, MD responded:
Anthony,

Your description is very suggestive of a kind of migraine which is affecting your vision. Was the vision alteration followed by a slight headache?

If having these "rainbows" is a new issue for you, it is probably smart to discuss with your primary care doctor as well as have a full exam with your ophthalmologist.
