so one day in may i woke up and my eyes were suuper puffy and red. i did think that much of it and just figured it was allergies. so i tok some allergy pills and put some compressed on my eyes and it eventually got better. then it happened a few more times the next week and the pills werent doing anything and my eyes were suuper red and sore, like to the point that i couldnt wear my contacts. so i went to the drs. they said it was just allergies and theres nothing i could do. continues for a week getting worse, i go back, they say the same thing. i go back a third time and they look in my eyes and say i need to go to the eye dr because they can see an outline of where my contacts were even though they arent in. so i go to the eye dr, and he says its allergies and give me some steroid drop things for my eyes and prescribes me some new contacts (because i have astigmatism and it had gotten worse than the last time i got contacts). the drops help and everything seems fine, so i try the new contacts and literally cant have them in for more than 10 minutes with my eyes burning. so i take them out and make another appointment. the eye doctor gives me allergy drops and says to use those and try my contacts again. so i do, same thing. except now the puffiness is gone and its just my right eye bothering me. its like EXTREMELY red and painful. i call, he orders me ANOTHER pair of contacts. i try those, cant keep them in. anytime i put them in my right eye gets read and hurts soooo bad and this lasts for like 3 days after i use the contacts.
it hurts CRAZY bad, like i feel like i shouldnt have my eye open, and its EXTREMELY bright red. and really sensitive to everything, especially light and any kind of air (like the wind blowing or someone walking by fast). it gets really throbby and watery. and in the morning it has like dischargeyish stuff, like youd get with pink eye, but its deff not pink eye. and its only my right eye and only after i use contacts.

i should add that i'm 22, i've worn contacts for over 10 years and have never had any issues before. this only happens in my right eye and only after i wear contacts. and i never sleep in my contacts.

Alan M Kozarsky, MD responded:
Sorry that you are having problems.

It definitely sounds like your eye inflammation is related to your contact lens wear. Allergic eye problems are associated with some swelling, itching, and a bit of irritation but not the severe discomfort that you mention. Your symptoms make me wonder whether the contact lens fit is too tight.

You need to leave out the contacts until your eyes feel and appear totally normal. Never leave in or insert a contact lens in the setting of existing eye irritation. Then, maybe, you need a new approach to contact lens fitting by a contact lens person who can offer expertise and many options in terms of types of contact lenses and personalized fitting. This is certainly not the kind of fitting that is typically done by large optical outlet stores.

So, start with your ophthalmologist to quiet your eye and assure no underlying problems. Then, go see the most expert contact lens fitter in your area.
