Dear Janet,

Welcome to the WebMD Community!

We have some wonderful experts on our Skin Problems and Treatments board who can probably give you some good pointers on treating bags under the eyes.

I hope you'll ask your questions there.

Take care,
Olivia

Alan M Kozarsky, MD responded:
Ms. Rae,

"Bags" under the eyes are a very common imperfection. This is especially true of our LASIK and cataract surgery patients when they become able to function without glasses and become more aware of their eyelid appearance with the eyelids not being hidden by eyeglass frames.

The eyelids get baggy because the eyelid skin is naturally very thin, it becomes redundant and the normal orbital (eye socket) fat comes forward through the thinned skin.

While I'm sure that there are cosmetic products that can disguise the baggy lids to some degree, the only real treatment is surgical.

Any number of qualified eyelid surgeons are waiting for your telephone call in order to help with this problem. The good news is that they will do a great job; the bad news is that it is elective, aesthetic surgery which will not be reimbursed by your medical insurance.
