I have a problem with my big toe nail

I noticed about 2 months ago that on my left foot the big toe nail is missing some nail it is missing in the middle of the nail length wise from top where you cut the toe nail to near the cuticle of my nail. I have done alot of research but can not find anything on this my friend is a nurse and she has never seen anything like this before so if anyone can help and give some input on this it would be so great. My friend did say that it doesn't look like fungus.
