Son has ankle damage from playing football

My son hurt his ankle playing football about 8 months ago. He had an MRI done 2 weeks ago and we finally got to see the doctor today. The doc printed out the MRI pics and basically said the injury was not repairable. My son graduates high school this year and he is crushed now because he thinks his football dream is over because there is no possible surgery to fix his issue. The doctor told us that he cracked one of his bones in his ankle which has since healed, but will always give him issues because of the way it healed. He said he would not even go scope it because he was afraid of doing more damage. I am getting a second opinion, but was wondering if anyone knew anything about this or could tell me something about the attached pictures. Thanks in advance for any help.
