Injured Toe

Hello All,

Last Tuesday (Valentines day), my girlfriend had opened the fridge and our side bar holding the condiments in came loose. A full glass bottle of soy sauce dropped on her big toe.

Its almost been a week and her toe is still black underneath. No blood or puss has come out of her toe. There is still a little swelling by her cutical and overall pain has gone away unless her toe gets touched firmly.

My main concern is, how do you know if this is getting infected?
Should we burn through her toe nail to release the blood?
Or should we wait for it to heal on its own?
When should we be thinking of a possible appointment to a physician to get her toe checked out?

She's 25, not on any medication so no blood thiners or anything is involved.

Thanks for any replies.
