Sudden onset of stool leaking and low bowel motility... anyone else having this type of problems?

wildyard posted:
Over just a few days early in March, I developed a problem with not having stools, but having leaking of liquid stool and/or mucus which I could not control. Within a month, I was having a few episodes of complete stool incontinence. I have been working thru this with my GI doctor, and answers are just not coming. She has suggested the possibility it might be the result of years of having IBS, or some effect from the fibromyalgia... all tests have been basically negative except for the low motility noted on colonoscopy.
I am NOT constipated, even tho I often can go 5+ days without having a BM. The stool is always very loose to watery. Today I am adding Fibercon and Miralax in the hopes the bulk and laxative will move things along... these are per my doctor from yesterday's office visit.
Also, a consult with a colorectal surgeon for evaluation is pending tho I'm not sure what they might have to offer here.

Mostly, we are just trying to figure out what might be going on here. So I thought to ask if anyone was aware of any connection between fibro and this kind of effect on bowel tone.

  • hugs* I have no idea what could be causing that, but I sure hope the doctors can figure it out quickly. Please let us know when you learn something.

I have been seeing Dr's for years about this problem... I would go days without going too in the beginning... but now it is constant incontenance..

I have multiple problems so with me it could be a mixture of a lot of things.. I told my gasteroenterologist tht is that it is the devils sick joke... and to keep chasing him... He will catch him one of these days... lol..

    I know it is uncomfortable...

I hope and pray you find answers very fast and that you can deal with it soon... I am sending you soft and gentle hugs... take care..

Sounds very uncomfortable. I had ulcerative colitis many years ago and it made me very sick for over a year.

I assume your doctor has guided you in trying to isolate a possible food allergy or sensitivity. You might also try eating a very low fat diet for a while.

For a while I could only eat soft, overcooked vegies, mashed potatoes without butter, boiled chicken, scrambled eggs, etc. Then I added brown rice, and it was very helpful in creating bulk. No white bread.

Also, try taking an acidophilus supplement, if your doctor agrees. Perhaps real yogurt would help supply enzymes.

Anyway, these are the things that helped me.

As for fibromyalgia, we are overly sensitive to a lot. That might explain things. You are also onto something when you talk about muscle tone in our bowels. Afterall, FM can affect any muscle.

I hope you can avoid surgery. Hopefully you will start getting better quickly!

    Margaret

I had the same thing happen to me. All the tests were negative and it was decided that it had to be related to my fibro. It took about a month for that particular flare to calm down. I ate very bland foods like mashed potatoes, ramen noodles etc. and the Dr. Gave me hypocosamine for the bowel spasms. Sorry you are going through this.

I finish the antibiotics today, so will be curious to see how things go in the next several days. I have started eating yogurt with active live cultures and am so appreciative of all your suggestions and sharing.
