OK....MiMi in NC...I just have a couple of questions for those of you who might know....how does gas heater pump work? is this a complicated thing to have? What exactly does it require a person to do...and also the same for a water heater...

If anyone knows and can share some information I would certainly appreciate this...

Have a great Saturday***

I know a little about water heaters:

The rods in them can be changed and extend the life of the heater. It looks like a bolt head on top of the water heater. If I recall, they collect deposits that couse corosion in the tank. I haven't replaced mine ever but I drain a little water out of it a few times a year to get the rust out of the tank.

Gas vapors are corrosive. You need a liner in a standard chimney, and if you don't have one get one or it will quickly deteriorate the clay liner. If you have standard galvanized pipe for the exhaust it still wears out eventually. I have to replace mine after 11 years. You may see white crusty build-up in the joints. If you do vapors are getting out of the pipe. Time to replace them.

The temp of the water heater should only be high enough to have hot water at the farthest point from the water heater. If it can scald you there, turn it down or you are throwing money away. The water heater is keeping all that water hot all the time.

Have at least one carbon monoxide detector if you have any gas appliances.

I know hot water heating systems need very little maint. but they do need some. Look for the manual neer your heating system. If it isn't there you can call a good plumber to service it or ask them what to do.

Hi MiMi. We have had a gas water heater for years. It only requires you to light it upon start-up or if you lose gas flow for some reason. Otherwise, it heats up water fast.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "gas heater pump." If you mean a heat pump with gas backup, that's what we have downstairs. It's a good combo right now with fuel costs changing. Also, when it gets below 40F the heat pump doesn't feel very warm but the gas heat is wonderful. In summer, the heat pump reverses and becomes your A/C. We got a digital thermostat with the new system about 4 years ago. I can tell it exactly when to run at what temperatures, and let it do its thing. Economical.

If you don't have gas lines to your house already, then you will need a plumber to run them to the locations.

The new gas systems are safer than years ago. If there's a leak you will smell it and can turn things off until repairs are made.

Is this what you were asking about?

Margaret

Thenk you both Margaret and Cory for providing me with this information....yes...I was raised on using a gas stove....but I did not know about the water heater and the gas heat...(to heat and provide air to the house)...this is a new thing for me to learn about....I am trying to learn more about it and just how safe it is....

I know that using a gas oven I had to light it each time to use it....and the burners I would just cut on...but that has been many years ago....and I am now only use to electric....

I have been told that gas heat is very warm....but I did not know just how complicated or complex it was to use it....this is not for me but for a family member...

Thanks again....I was hoping someone could tell me..

The gas water heater is outside in a building....
