Your Questions About Affordable Care for Seniors

Caprice_WebMD_Staff posted:
Dear Community Members,

Dr. Louise Chang from our WebMD medical staff is going to be taking part in a panel discussion at the White House on Monday, June 11 — Online Seniors' Health Town Hall -- regarding affordable health care for seniors.

If you are a senior or a caregiver for someone who needs affordable care, we'd love to gather your questions and comments for Dr. Chang to present to the panel. Providing these questions give the folks who make the laws insight into how REAL people are affected by their decisions.

We appreciate your feedback and candor, and look forward to passing it along.

Take care,
The WebMD Community Staff

Caprice, I would be happy to answer some questions or ask some....I am dealing with my parents that need care. Right now they have some money for this, but it is very expensive, and we are trying to figure out how we can continue this care. I am not sure how to connect with Dr. Chang.

For those of us who are not old enough to be on medicare, but are older and have significant medical issues, we really need ObamaCare to kick in with requiring health insurance companies to cover pre-existing illnesses.

Right now, my husband is on Medicare, but I am 60 years old. If I lose my health insurance which is from my employer, then absolutely no company will cover my illnesses. This would likely bankrupt us. I am barely able to work as it is which greatly exacerbates my medical problems.

Thanks for any consideration you can give to my concerns.

caprice,

One of the things that comes to me in my daily care of the elderly is they have NO IDEA of the "help" that is available to them.

The office of the aging or the SSI office or government subsidized programs are not listed in an area for refrernce for them.

I have suggested private elder care companies to start as they have a handle on the local resources.

BUT it is a terrible thing to see a patient struggling to care for their loved one and you know that Visiting nurse is appropriate or a health aid for 4 hours is available to them AND THEY DIDN'T KNOW!

The doctors are clueless to the services for their patients and it breaks my heart.

I do alot of referring in my area as I had worked hospice and LEARNED it there....that the social workers shared the info, that support was available in so many ways.

It is different in all areas too. NO STANDARD of CARE.

So, that is some of the thoughts I have. People have no idea that respite care for Alzeimers is available for a weekend break by most facilities, on the medicare part A section.

For some to find this out, brings tears to their eyes as they are so exhausted. There are some serious problems out there.

OK, that is just some things off the top of my head!...Nancy B

Nancy...

We have asked and asked if there is any medicare help for my parents and been told no...

mom with alzheimers and dad with his low blood pressure..many other things..and we have been told it is up to them to pay for help. I realize my parents do get a good pension, but it is so expensive for this help..and if they go to assisted living, even more..

It seems ashamed for them to have to sell everything just to get the help they need..
