I am a 52 year old stay at home grandmother of 3 children who are ages 3 months, 23 months, and age 3. I was diagnosed with fibroyalgia about a year ago. I have had FM for probably 8 years, but doctors made me feel like a hypochondriac for years. So I tried to quit complaining until the pain got almost unbearable about 1 year ago. Have a good doctor now. I just started Savella two days ago. I'm really nauseated, but heard these side effects will get better after about 2 weeks. I don't like taking strong meds, but I want to be able to help take care of my grandchildren. They are my joy. Has anyone else tried Savella? I was also trying some herbs like 5 HTP, which helped emotionally, but it didn't help the pain. I am also trying a gluten free diet to see if that helps, as well.

Good Morning Nana,

I am Nana too! I am in trouble too......

I also take savella and found it just the box on my box of meds.
The special thing about savella is it increases norepinephrine three time that of seratonin...so that is how painfree can happen. Adrenaline is quite strong a pain blocker. People who are hurt in an accident don't feel the pain for quite a bit, as their adrelaline is up. (they say they are in shock) but it is adrenaline/ chemical cousin to norepinephrine.

So, sorry about the nausea...it will pass as they say, I had increased B/P and heart rate, palpatations for a bit too....so be aware.

I can only take 12,5mg a day to 25mg a day...and am fine with this, I have about an 8 hour wellness window before the dip again. I will not take it twice a day as it keeps me from sleeping.

We have seen here we are all different, just remember to go slow with things as you may be sensitive too.

I have to say though I don't think I could watch those age groups on a regular basis. I have a 1y/o and a 3y/o...and they KNOCK me out after all the loving that is done.

I guess if you do something all the time, you have adjusted the play you choose and what muscles you allow to be pushed. This is a war , a war of dynamics that you have to have your eyes open and be planning ahead at all times.

I do things sometimes that surprise me that I accomplished it...then I may suffer the wrath after.....but it was worth it. EVERYDAY I don't know if I could hold it together. So CUDDOS to you. A good Nana is a blessing for sure. Our children need all the help they can get.

OK, so look in the toolbox under resources to the right.....check out the book in there that I talk about to survive the little things that go wrong. GREAT non medical tricks. Dr P here also has books of knowledge and fortitude to fight this dragon.....

I have over this past years begun to finally dance with this dragon instead of draggin the dragon behind me. It helped a bit to reconsile with him that he is always here with me. Soon in my mind I will have outfits for him eachday so he is appropriate to deal with!! . (I know I sound wacky, but what ever gets it dealt with and better for you, you do!)

My meds are Soma, Ultracet, Savella, B Complex, Vit D, Calcium and Magnesium twice a day with CoQ10 in there too.I also have Avapro for my B/P........(my mixture of survival)

All the best from me, Nancy B

Hi Nana,
nice to 'meet' you.
I didn't get on with 5HTP at all but you are finding it OK?
I'd be interested in what you make of the gluten free diet as it is something I have been considering.

Thank you for your response. I have been on savella for six days, but I don't think I will continue it. Too many side effects. I do have a heart condition, though my cardiologist gave me the ok to take it, but while watching my bp. I'm use to the sweats because of menopause, and the nausea I could handle for little while, but the irritability was awful! I really am a pretty patient person, though this FM has made me not as cheerful as I use to be. I got so angry at something my husband said to me yesterday. He really doesn't believe FM is a real condition. He thinks I just need to get out there and walk it off or do some other exercise. Usually I can handle remarks he makes, but not while on savella. Getting angry is not like me at all! Though the savella helped a little with the pain, I don't think it's worth the side effects. I will look the tool box for non medical tricks.
Thank you for listening. Take care.

Hi Jilly,
I've been on a gluten free diet for almost a week. It's nice that the grocery stores carry more gluten free foods than they use too. So I'm not starving. Plus there are many good recipes online. I have lots a few pounds, too, but that may be because of the savella and nausea. I plan to stop the savella today. I've only been on it for less than a week. I liked how the 5 HTP helped me feel. It didn't take away the pain, but it helped me relax more. I can't take it with savella.
Take care
