Summer Plans and Travel Tips

While Caprice is off summering, traveling and hopefully relaxing in comfort, she wanted to talk about summer plans and travel tips.

Traveling - whether it's road trips or flying or just staying in a hotel or a strange bed in a family member's home - can be challenging for anyone who already is dealing with chronic pain and problems with sleep. How do you manage it?

No doubt Caprice will be able to add her tips and experience from her vacation upon her return.

Hi Elizabeth,
I can't say much about travel this year because I'm not doing any. I broke my leg and ankle in mid-April and am still in a cast. That aside, I tend to find travelling stressful, especially when someone else is in charge of the schedule.

I prefer trips that Husband and I plan where we can do things at our leisure, because he knows what I deal with. We tend to do "easy" things, like camping or spending a few days at a kite festival. I make sure I bring my pain meds, (although I seldom use them), extra snacks, glucose tabs for the hypoglycemia, a blanket to wrap up in, and lots and lots of bottled water. I will also bring my crocheting, my journal and a good puzzle book so I can enjoy myself while Husband plays.

I try to keep meals and sleep on the same schedule I have at home, as this minimizes the disruption. I also carry MidNite PM just in case I can't sleep. My IPod helps too...Husband has a hearing problem so he turns the TV up loud, and my music helps to drown out the noise.

Guess I has a few travel tips after all...hope they help. I will be counting my blessings if I can travel past our deck!

My DH and I really need a vacation..... With me not working it is not possible. He is hoping to get the uses of a friends cabin in the mountains for a weekend. Tat would be nice!

Coping? Not really looking forward to the drive. Car rides for extended periods is very painful. We also have his mothers birthday to attend next month. That is over a three hour drive....... Boooo... I am sure fibro will fear its ugly head for that drive. Got to dope up for it. Lol

For long trips, I have to take frequent breaks from sitting in the car or on a plane.

Being very noise sensitive I always travel with ear plugs! If possible at hotels, I request a room that is away from the elevator. Less noise from the elevator and people getting off of it.

I use a lavender scented aromatheraphy body lotion before bed. It helps to relax me. I always be sure to pack that in my suitcase.

You sure did, Angelswife.

I hope you're able to get that cast off soon.

I try to pace myself too when traveling. Not always possible but then I try and give myself time after a trip to rest before heading back to work.

I hope you're able to get away to that cabin in the mountains, Kim.

I'm with you on the long drives. I can no longer do the actual driving and even sitting for that long is difficult... so this latest trip, my friend did all the driving and we stopped often enough for me to take a bit of a walk, etc.

I use ear plugs too, Teelady.

I just returned from a driving trip and managed to take plenty of breaks (with my friend driving), but have a couple of flights coming up I need to do. Traveling with someone is always easier but that won't be feasible the next couple of times so I'll be taking time off afterwards just to recuperate.

I don't do well with aromas BUT I really like your tip and I bet it would help others too.

I don't take long trips anymore. I use a walker and it is difficult for me to ride anymore. I am looking forward to a fairly long auto trip in Oct. when my grandson gets married.

He is so special to me. At one time I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to take the triput now I feel that I can. I am so looking forward to it as my only travel now seems to be 15 miles to WalMart and the grocery store. LOL

When my daughter comes home, she usually takes me 50 mi. to the mall. She asks me where I want to go! I just want to get into stores and she what is going on. She uses the wheelchair for this-----so grateful to her.

Have fun to those that can travel!!!!

How great that your doctor takes you to the mall like that!

Congrats on your grandson's upcoming nuptuals! I'm glad you'll be able to make it.
