Could it be MORE than "just fibromyalgia"??

I have had fibromyalgia for a long time. (I am now 39 ) It has gotten progressively worse (despite the fact they used to tell you it does not get worse and it goes away! LOL!!)

The thing is, it seems EVERYTHING that is wrong with me the doctors want to now blame on FMS. Ok, I know that I do in fact have fibromyalgia ... but I think I have MS too. I had a brain MRI and it showed no lesions - but I heard a lot of people don't have lesions on the brain. They have them on the neck and spine.

Before I continue rambling, (sorry, I am in A LOT of pain right now and I am just trying to write this and it isn't coming out well) let me tell you my symptoms.

Maybe one of you have symptoms like mine ... so I will know it really is "just fibromyalgia")

Migraines

Complex Migraine (thought I had a stroke 2 weeks ago - whole left side severely weakened after 20 seconds of intense head pain) ER Dr. consulted neurologist who said must be migraine related

Muscle Spasms - ALL OVER! Every muscle you can think of! Several muscles at once. EVERY DAY! PAINFUL - going on 2 months

Tingling/Numbness/Burning/Itching/Stabbing sensations

Loss of Balance

Eye Pain

Speech Problems ( Almost out of nowhere it feels like my tongue doubled it's size and I have a bit of a speech problem)

Throat and neck feels swollen

Fatigue (Nothing new)

Cognitive Problems (worse than ever)

Lack of Cordination

I can't think of anything else right now. ... Does this sound familiar to anyone??

My best friend just got diagnosed with MS & she does not have half the symptoms you have.

They did an MRI (showed lesion) & spinal tap.

I think the few things she said she noticed was speech & sporadic muscle spasms along with fatigue.

They thought she had a stroke at first. She however is doing well & continues to work & raise her 3 children.

Fibro does not go away, unless you take out all the nerves & muscles in you body...However it does not progress, there is nothing but pain to progress which is what happens as we get older.

Did you get a full work up by the neurolgoist?

I share many of your symptoms. In my opinion, many of those can really be blamed on FM, but many could also be blamed on MS. By the way, I am diagnosed with "possible MS" as well as FM and RA...so it's hard to know where a symptom is coming from. In any case, I treat the symptom.

All these diseases can take years to diagnose. The thing I've learned is not to panic and to keep a list of symptoms and when they occurred. That way I'm not running to a specialist and getting tests too often, which is expensive and stressful for me.

Be sure to see your neurologist every year or two, or whenever he says. It must have been scary to have one side be affected as you had! I think you did the right thing in going to the ER, as it could have been a stroke and fast action would have been important.

Do you notice more of these symptoms with the heat of summer, or after a hot shower or bath? Nerve demyelination can show up more in the heat.

Hopefully you are experiencing a flare of FM and will be feeling better after some rest. Take care.
With Compassion,
Margaret
