Help! I need a Dr. who treats FM and Migraines that takes Medicade.
Christianmom48 posted:
I moved here to Charleston, WV last summer from Michigan. I had good Dr.'s their. But I just couldn't take another cold winter. Now I'm not able to find a Dr. who will except medicade and that treats FM as well as the Migraine headaches I have suffered from for many years. I'm on disability because of the Migraines and receive medicade, but so far in this state I feel like they look down on ya if you have medicade as if I were getting welfare or as if I were some kind of drugie. I havew no problem taking a blood or urine drug test when ever they want, I just need to find some kind of help. I have been off my meds for my Migraines and FM for months now and the past three days Ive been in bed and not able to go any where or do anything. I hate having FM. It hurts just to be touched. Is there anyone who know's of a good Dr' that would see me?

Hi Christianmom48 , and welcome.
We're not allowed to recommend doctors by name. Many of us here see pain specialists or rheumatologists. A good doc who knows about FM will test to eliminate some stuff, like MS or lupus. Unfortunately, FM is an illness of elimination - they have to check for what it's not before they decide what it is. Make sure your doc checks your trigger points, and tells you as he/she does it.

There are some good resources in the right-hand column. Also check out . It has good tips for us, and you have to check out The Spoon Theory - it will help you explain to people what it's like to be in your body.

Have your doc check you for Vitamin D deficiency. Sounds simple, but we who live in the northern hemisphere are usually lacking in D.

Have the best day you can possibly have,

Good morning,

May I suggest that you look into the clinic at a large teaching facility in your neck of the woods...or travel if you must. In that clinic will be Neurology (who covers migraines and so data has yeilded that migraine like pain can be neck and muscle related...)

So, if I were in your shoes I would look for that HUGE tertiary hospital(medical center)......and call the main number, ask for the clinic for rheumatology and also look inot neurology and see who has an opening..........the other way into that clinic is to be seen in the ER...and the residents and fellows will refer you to be seen in the clinic. (Not the best way to use the system, but it might be the only way right now to begin a relationship wit them).

I am sorry this is always a problem when people move. You sound proactive and just get all your problems and issues in line and all the things you do to be BETTER as well. Be consise on the paper and let them learn of you. Have the doctor who treated you last send you a cover letter to bring to the place as well.

Another thing I want to point out. The person booking you a spot on the roster is NOT A NURSE, NOT A DOCTOR and often have HS training.............They have alot of power when they turn away people or make decisions to book out*...(later then sooner) people who need to be seen.

I make friends right away with that person.....

Life is a game and I try to play it well. Sad, but it is true. I bribe every office I go, neuro, PMD...they all get cookies, fruit...they all know me well. I never go empty handed even the littlest of things.....the thought is remembered.
Even Stella d'oro breakfast treats were handed to the PMD's girls to go with coffee....a can of coffee...

I gave the dentist clementines...5.00 just said, Hey it's flu season...I don't want you getting sick!! Goes a long way..

So try the medical center idea and remember the hugging to get in the door or result to the ER for the referral........

Good luck, Nancy B

I just thought of another idea:

Call Social services in that area and ask for a list of participating physicians to care for you.....or go down to their office in your town. There you can at least start with a private attending adn he can get you a name of who will help......

OK, out of ideas...........Nancy B

Thanks everyone! I have had my Vitamin D checked in the last state I was in. It was Low so I do take that. As well as several other Vitamins that I read would help. I will contact the clinics today because now my walking is even more dificult. I have kids to take care of and just cant go around in all this pain. There has to be some kind of treatment out there. I was Diagnosed in Michigan by several Dr.'s and they all agreed on it being FM. I
Guess I may have to take a trip to the ER or medi center this week if Im not doing any better. Its so hard whaen I can hardly get out of bed due to all the pain in my back and legs. Thank you all very much.
