Can anyone answer this question. I recently tried to go pass failure with a bench press and now I have this bad pain in my back. its to the point where I cannot even look down to well because it feels as if my shoulder blade or the muscle next to my spine is stretching has anyone experienced this if so what could it be?

Maybe you strained a muscle, but someone is going to have to examine it. Getting a proper diagnosis and treatment recommendations online is sketchy. Go ahead and call your doctor. Injuries usually require rest and ice. When you get better and start lifting again on the bench, put a rolled towel under your neck to support your neck and back, keep your knees bent with feet on the bench, and use a spotter. Feel better. Rich

Thanks for the advice will do. I had a xray done and they said everything was fine no abnormalities. i really don't bench to much because i have problems benching i usually just stay with the dumbbell press or push ups but i want good gains and everyone says in order to get the results i want i have to bench. by the way do you know when you should try to go beyond failure and try to get the last rep out or when are you suppose to know when you should stop while your ahead?

You're welcome. The conventional wisdom on working to fatigue is that you work to "volitional fatigue" on every set of every exercise because it is believed you recruit as many fibers as possible with this advice. However, there was a study published recently that showed working to fatigue was not necessary for substantial gains in strength. In your case, proper form is more important than working to fatigue (where you risk injury), which it sounds like happened. And of course the other recommendations I already mentioned. Good luck with your training. Rich
