teens and stretch marks

My daughter is 13, 5'4 and 135lbs. Probally considered a little overweight by age, but no means fat. However, she has a lot of stretch marks on her thighs. I'm concerned at her getting self conscious about her body. She hasn't gained a lot of weight rapidly. Should I encourage her to lose weight and become more active. She is mildly active now, but her diet is so so( she seems to snack a lot afterschool when she is alone). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You have significant control over what she eats and what she spends. This is a critical stage of development in your daughter's life. The choices you (and she) make will set the tone over what she eats the rest of her life.

Diet is a four letter word. The binge-purge pattern of most members, here, started when we were very young...

back then, we didn't know any better...neither did our moms.

Hi Anon,

Exercise is always a good idea, so yes, encouraging her (gently) to be active is a good idea. It will help improve her strength and endurance, and can help as a confidence boost too if she responds positively (she shouldn't be pushed to the point where it's not fun) . Of course, active parents as good role models is always important, so be sure that you are active as well. As a family you can spend time on the weekends doing things like bike rides, hiking, walks in a park, tossing a ball etc.
