    Yo yo weight lose/gain

    I have struggled with weight problems most of my life. I can't seem to stay motivated to keep going. I start off excellent and lose about 10 pounds and then gain half back. Then get strong and lose another 10 and gain half back. I am losing weight consistently over time but is this dangerous? My blood pressure is almost into a normal range now and I really do want to keep going. I have also been able to come off one of my blood pressure meds al together and really look forward to being off the other one eventually. My intention is great, however my track record is not. Is there a way I can re-train myself to have more will power/discipline to keep going. I have tried every diet pill and joining groups and diets out there, I can't seem to stay on track for more than a few months ( At the longest)

    Hi Trinity,

    Nope, it's not dangerous. It's funny, because although the beginning of your post sounds negative, and I was expecting a different outcome, indeed you have come off your BP meds, and I'll bet there are other benefits as well. As for losing and then gaining, my take on it is that you have tremendous willpower/discipline. Yes, you gain half back, but maybe your new strategy ought to be that you lose the weight over 3 months and then take a break. So you plan for a break from the hard work of weight loss but make a promise to yourself to not regain (instead of getting discouraged). It's a reasonable strategy because if you think about it, weight loss really does take work, and your body, and your mind, need a break every so often. So your focus during weight loss is different than your focus during maintenance. You should stay focused during maintenance, it's just that you ramp it down a little and give your body a chance to catch up. There's always a slight slow down in metabolism with weight loss, and yours seems to come after about 3 months. You can read more here about how people lose weight and how they maintain.

    Another thing to do is recalculate how many calories you need to consume to maintain and then to lose again. When you lose weight you need fewer calories (and/or more exercise) to continue to lose. I suggest you estimate your basal or resting metabolic rate (BMR) every 3 months. You can do that here:

    You didn't mention exercise or what you're doing for it. It's the best predictor of keeping your weight off. You don't lose a lot of weight with exercise, but you could probably use it during your 3-month break for maintenance.

    Finally, you should think about your language. Your beating yourself up when the fact is, you are losing weight in the short and long run, and you're getting healthier. Celebrate your victories. You're doing good work.
