    Workout After Back Injury

    Hello all! I have a question. I injured my back (strained a muscle -- quote from the doctor is "mild degenerative") last Wednesday. I was squatting and I felt a pop in my lower back. My question is this: how long should I wait to go back to the gym? I want to train my upper body. If I do this, will it affect my back injury? Should I wait, and for how long? Any advice would be great... Never had a back injury before....

    It's always a good idea to ask your doctor but If your back still hurts you shouldn't immediately return to the same level of activity that you were before your hurt your back.

    Make sure you stretch, use lighter weights and avoid exercises impacting your lower back. Stop if you feel pain. When feeling better you can increase the intensity.

    I'd recommend swimming too. My dad always had back problems when I was growing up, and swimming was what his doctor recommended. It helped his back out a lot!
