I had a discussion with a friend that said she will not, under any circumstance introduce running into her fitness routine because running can damage the knees.
Every article I've ever read always says that runners (those who run excessively for years and for long periods of time) are usually the ones that experience these problems. But I assured her that if you run two or three times a week for 1-3 miles isn't going to damage your knees over time.
Also, there are other things, worse than running that damage your knees. Plyo workouts for example are high intensity and high impact, especially on the knees.

I think your friend is a little extreme when it comes to her feelings toward running. I lost 40 pounds (155 to 115) from running and not changing my diet at all. Initially everything hurt (feet, knees, hips, back) since I was so overweight (I'm 5'1"), but as long as you don't injure any parts of your body, it should get stronger and you can run more miles. I completed 2 marathons and countless 10K-15K races since and my knees are not a problem anymore. I have cut down my miles for the past 6 months (from 30 miles/week to 15 miles/week) due to just being busier. But I would encourage you to try running. Just make sure to wear good, supportive shoes (never skimp on the shoes).
And your shoes will likely only last about 400 miles or so before the cushioning wears out. You will know from having gradually increasing foot pain with older shoes. Mark on a calendar, or the shoes, the day you bought them, and keep track of your miles per week.
If just starting, treat yourself to GOOD running shoes. You will enjoy running a lot more by saving your feet.
