Growing your own vegetables can be a great way to not only incorporate more fresh food into your diet but also get some exercise. Gardening is considered a moderate to heavy intensity physical activity, and has been linked to significant beneficial changes in total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure (Armstrong, 2000.) By growing your own food you also cut down on the amount of pesticides used to protect your food and also the amount of preservatives used on your food in order to transport them. It is also just a great way to get outside and be active.

Hi jswini422 and thank you so much for this information!

I have recently started a garden on my apartment balcony (which is tiny but works for me). I have an assortment of herbs, lettuce, blueberries, peppers and tomatoes. Hopefully I will be able to keep them alive long enough to enjoy their harvest! Do you (or anyone else out there) have a garden of your own? Any tips for getting the most out of small-space gardening?

I enjoyed my first garden last year. The only tips I have are plenty of sun(at least 6 to 8 hours), don't let plants dry out(keep soil moist), and watch out for frost.
