    Exciting News for WebMD Members!

We've been busy behind the scenes building new message boards for you. You'll have new and easier ways to find messages, connect with others, and share your stories.

And, this will all be available on your smartphone or other mobile device!

What Do You Need to Do?

The message board you're used to will be closing in the coming weeks. While many of your boards will be making the move to our new home, your posts will not. Want to keep a discussion going? Save posts you want to continue (this includes your member profile story), so that you can re-post them in the new message boards.

Length of GERD pain during episode

I am trying to adjust to having GERD. I get terrible chest pain that lasts hours. Or it will subside for awhile and then return. It is at the top of my chest so I assume it's esphogeal. Is this common to GERD? It doesn't matter what I eat, Pepcid helps only a little and GasX only a little. I get this about an hour after eating and then have it for hours. It is very sharp pain with lots of burping.

Fisherville, it does sound a lot like what might be described as esophageal spasms. For something like that you should be talking to your doctor or GI person. There are meds that can help, but it sounds like your GERD isn't being well-controlled. Call and get an appointment to figure out what medications can help. And be sure to consider a change in diet and lifestyle modifications that can also give you a hand in trying to handle the problem.
