If the hiatal hernia is bothering you in a significant fashion, you should avoid exercises that increase pressures in the abdominal cavity. If the pressure increases and you're in a 'lying down' position, it can result in increasing pressure on the bottom of the stomach, forcing fluid within the stomach into the esophagus. So abdominal crunches amd the like in a lying position should be avoided. But if you can vary the angle you're doing them in - assuming a more 'upright' position - you should be fine.

Think through what you're doing and make the necessary changes.
