    Acid reflux

    For last 2 years have had problems with acid after eating any food. I have no other medical issues, am not overweight, and not overstressed. Went to doctor 2 years ago, but he ordered blood tests and it ended up costing me $500, and they found nothing wrong. I can't afford another visit like that. He prescribed prilosec, which helped for a little while. Recently finished another 2 week dose- It worked great while I was on it, but acid returned almost immediately after I finished. Often take small dose of baking soda after meals, 1 to 3 times/ day, and sometimes at night. Prilosec instructions say to repeat use only every 90 days. I'm concerned of long term effects of baking soda/drugs/antacids. I don't know what to do; funds are low and doctors charge more for a 5 minute visit than I make in 1 or 2 days. As I said, I have acid no matter what kind of food I eat, even if it's a small snack like a granola bar. Are there foods or ways to strengthen the muscles that might prevent this?

    HandymanAndyman, check on www.gicare.com for suggestions on a GERD-friendlly diet.

    Proton pump inhibitors and histamine blockers for acid suppression are taken by many for extended periods of time - far longer than the 14 or 90 days that may be on the package labels. Some people are on the meds for years. That is not to say there aren't side-effects, there are, but in some cases it may be necessary to stay on them long-term.

    There is no way at the present time to strengthen the muscles to stop this from happening. Diet, medication and making life-style changes are the only current options outside of surgery, if it's indicated.
