    Exciting News for WebMD Members!

We've been busy behind the scenes building new message boards for you. You'll have new and easier ways to find messages, connect with others, and share your stories.

And, this will all be available on your smartphone or other mobile device!

What Do You Need to Do?

The message board you're used to will be closing in the coming weeks. While many of your boards will be making the move to our new home, your posts will not. Want to keep a discussion going? Welcome to Grumpy Groupies!!! This group is open to every one. I hope that all my buddies will join and use it often. Sad or happy, NO discussion is taboo. I do ask that you use Trigger in the title when necessary. Hopefully we can have fun and also support those who are having a hard time. Muahs

Hi my lovely bro.... :) I read your post about you and your kids having major depression from October to March..... I have a couple of questions and a couple of thoughts..... ok questions... do you live somewhere that get's really dark during the winter months? Have you tried taking melatonin and Vitamin D during those months? Melatonin (you probably already know this. sorry) is what the brain produces and needs to help keep sleep cycles and moods better balanced during those months .. just a thought... Do you also suffer from SAD? I use a light box everyday (ok, when I remember) during those months as the light helps a great deal with mood. (like sun in a box.. ;) ) .. ok those were my thoughts.. now.... That time of the year is really really bad for me... also like clockwork.... I feel the change start in mid October, and by mid November all hell has broken loose. (I am a rapid cycler, BP1 and get very dangerous mixed episodes during those months, every year.. they are getting worse with each passing year ..... Do you find you are getting more affected by this as the years go by? It's awful for me, and when I come out on the other side, the damage I've done is heart wrenching.. but I just wake up one day early January and am clear headed, but then slip into a depression....do you just get the depression or swings as well?

ok.... just interested in another persons thoughts who goes through something similar..... thanks honey.. good to see you ( I haven't been here for awhile because I am trying to clean up the broken things and get past this years damage.. it a rough one this year)

    Hugs

Snowy, I live in south dakota,so we do have a long cold winter here.Ive never been dx'd with SAD,but Im sure we have it at our house.Ive been getting outside lately as the weather is warming up.try to sit in the sun for 20 min when its sunny.Been getting out scouting turkeys, that has helped with the depression,i always get a recharge from it.I know your a canuck but what part do you live in?Can a DR. prescribe a light box,so you can get it with a copay on insurance? Id sure be interested. hope your weather is getting warmer up there.

Its the same for me, except its with men. My hubby and I have an understanding and an agreement, we dont talk to the opposite sex on IM or Email. That way there are no misunderstandings. It works quite well. I have never had to B**** slap him yet. ;)

I would like to thank you Royce for being such a good friend. I will never forget how much your kind words helped me when my best friend Cookie passed away. Any time I think of her, and that is quite often, I remember you were there for me. So anyways, enough of the sad, gooshy, blah blah stuff.

Peace out dude buddy guy friend of mine.

    Hi lovely bro..... ;)

It sounds to me very much like you have SAD.. up here the winters are long and dark so SAD is common. Getting out side is a great thing to do, it helps a lot...

I live in Ontario... brrr in winter!.. I actually have a light box, (now if I would just take it out of the box!) you can buy them in the stores here no prob. Our medical system is very different than yours is.
We all are covered by national health care system broken down by province, so we don't have to pay for many services etc, as they're covered. Shrinks are free up here,(try finding one that's taking patients tho...) specialists can take up to a year to get into see but are covered, hospital waits (ie emergency) are totally ridiculous, unless your shot in the for head or having a heart attack right on the spot, your looking at an 8 hour wait to get into see a doc. etc etc...

Some people buy extra insurance on top of that, but not many. We pay for our health care through our paychecks (ie taxes) and most surgery's are free except for the anesthesiologist and somethings aren't covered under the health care plan.

hummmm sorry I ramble.... are you looking for a lite box?
We just got a huge pile of snow yesterday and it's -14 right now... (I think that's about 7 degrees F ) brrrr....

    Hugs Hon,
    Snowy

Hey there girlie, 7deg oh gosh.Im freezing and its 30 here. Im not really looking or thinking about a light box right now.Im sure it would turn out to be used as much as yours. The longer days bring better moods.i try to get out in the sun when its sunny out, been kinda dreary lately though.

your health care system is quite different than yours. We pay for it in taxes, then we pay for it monthly, then we get to pay again at 20% of total cost if hospitalized. We end up paying so much that we dont go to the Dr. unless its an emergency or one of the kids. Thanks for the reply Snowy,I apreciate it.
