I've been using Enjuvia .9mg for two years. My pharmacy has given me Premarin .9mg instead of Enjuvia. Is this a problem?

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear Middy: They would be considered to be therapeutically equal. Both are conjugated estrogens. Premarin is made from the urine of pregnant mares; Enjuvia is derived from plant sources. They contain some similar specialized estrogen compounds. However, Premarin likely contains other compounds as well. At this time there is debate whether those compounds have additional health benefits to human woman.

Bottom line, try the Enjuvia and see if you get the same symptom relief as you did with your Premarin. If you notice a significant difference (and you may not) you can request your pharmacy to supply Premarin. Your GYN may have to write a letter of exception if the brand of drug is an insurance company decision.
