bleeding after MC

Hello. I had a complete miscarriage on 5/6/12. I went to the ER and was told there was no sign of pregnancy in my uterus. I had heavy bleeding for a few days after and spotting off on until today 5/25/12. This afternoon I started to bleed more heavily again - like a normal period. Could this be my period or something more serious? I'm concerned because it's a holiday weekend and I won't be able to get in touch with my doctor for several days. Any help is appreciated.

Dear An: We are grieved to hear about the recent loss of your pregnancy. I can understand why this bleeding would be a cause for concern.

It sounds like you had bleeding then spotting from 5/6 until 5/25. Then suddenly the bleeding picked up to be more like a normal period---hope I am tracking you correctly. I would doubt this is your "real period. Even if you you experienced an early miscarriage (eg less than 12 weeks pregnant) we would not usually expect the initial "real period" to arrive for at least 4-6 weeks. If you had a later miscarriage it could take even longer.

You MIGHT be having the erratic bleeding for a couple of reasons:

1. A tiny fragment of pregnancy tissue remained in the uterus. This can set up inflammation of the lining of the uterus which will prompt continued bleeding. You mentioned that no evidence of pregnancy was seen on ultrasound in the ER so this may not be your culprit.

2. After the abrupt decline of pregnancy hormone levels it can take a while for your natural ovulations and cycles to reset. This can prompt erratic bleeding patterns.

I would suggest that you leave a message for your GYN with their answering service. Usually someone is responsible for covering call over a holiday weekend. Hopefully someone will phone you back so they can be appraised of your duration and amount of bleeding. Take it easy. If you bleed so heavily as to completely fill a maxi pad every two hours for several hours you might need to go back to the ER. One would expect this current bleeding to not be to that severe.

Yours,
Jane
