I am A 44 year old woman who had my tubes tied last year in March (2011). Since then, every month, there is a very strong, kind of sweet, odor that I have for a few days after my period. There is a clear discharge also. Should I see my Dr about this?

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear An: Your discharge onsets a few days after your period stops; I am assuming that is about cycle day 8-12. Hope I am tracking you correctly.

Depending upon the usual length of your menstrual month (ie 28 days) that discharge MIGHT be related to the brief spike of estrogen which occurs about 48 hours prior to ovulation. This same spike is responsible for "fertile mucus," the clear stretchy cervical discharge that can look as thick as egg white. If you were using a hormonal form of birth control prior to your tubal ligation, ovulation would have been suppressed. Thus you would not have seen this marker for ovulation.

Honestly, I cannot think of a condition linked specifically to having a tubal ligation which would create a discharge at precisely this time month after month. Your best bet is to see your GYN at the time the discharge is present. They can give you the most "for sure" answer that way.

Yours,
Jane
