Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear melbrock: From what you have shared it sounds like you had a bladder infection (urinary tract infection or UTI). The frequent urination and lower back pain can be symptoms of a UTI which has advanced up into the kidney. The Cipro is a very potent antibiotic which should kill most of the usual bacterias associated with a kidney infection. By the way, alpha strep is not considered a common cause of kidney infections.

Alternatively, if your pelvic exam suggested a pelvic infection ("PID") the pain with bowel movement and right abdomen pain could be symptoms of a PID.

The burning vaginal pain could be a yeast infection. You may have had this when you first went in. After exposure to oral antibiotics a yeast infection can either start or get much worse. My best GUESS is that the creams are for a yeast infection.

PLEASE, please call the GYN or clinic, or ER where you were seen. Tell them about your nausea and dizziness. These may be a side effect of the Cipro. Such symptoms can also be a worsening of a kidney infection. You should also ask them to tell you your diagnosis--you can ask specifically about bladder/kidney infection vs pelvic infection. I am sincerely sorry that you were discharged to home without someone giving you more information about your condition.

In Support,
Jane
