I have a bad yeast infection so 200mg diflucan also for ten days for the breast infection keflex 4 times a day for 10 days also and follow up with doc in 3-4 days she thinks I should get a mamo because it is odd that I have a breast infection or mastitias that wont go away my nipple has a crust like thing on it also and will not go away it bleeds sometimes. Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear smjpain: Yes, it is a good thing you will be seeing your GYN for a look at the breast. The ten days of Keflex suggests that the ER MD thought the breast infection was caused by normal skin bacteria (eg staph or strep).

Without a doubt the constant antibiotics of one kind or another has contributed to the "super-sized" yeast infection. Hence the Difulcan--which might even need to be repeated at the end of the Keflex.

It is possible to have a "non-lactational mastitis" a breast infection in a non-nursing women. One can also get an abscess from mastitis. If one has a persisting mastitis which does not go away a mammogram is often done to rule out a very rare form of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer. In your specific case, because you have had months of all kinds of infections plus MRSA, my money is on an infection only.

Let us know what happens after your GYN visit, OK?

Yours,
Jane
