No menstrual cycle

I am only 24 and I have not had my menstrual cycle since October. I am not pregnant, but I am trying. My doctor told me that I was overweight and thats why I was not getting it. In January I weighed in at 207 pounds, my doctor told me to lose at least 10 pounds and it should start to regulate. In April I weighed in at 194 pounds and nothing has changed. Could there be something more going on that maybe my doctor is not catching?

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear rebeccafish: Generally speaking we tell women that a weight loss of about 10% of body weight may restart ovulations and more regular flows. In your specific case that would be a weight loss of 21 pounds--or a weight of 186 pounds. Some women will restart ovulations with as little as 5% or 10 pounds (lucky them!) of weight loss.

My best GUESS Is that your GYN has ruled out some of the other common causes of missed ovulations leading to missed periods : low thyroid, pituitary problems, ovarian cysts, physical stressors (eg sudden increases in exercise, crash dieting), emotional stressors (problems with partner or boyfriends/girlfriends,finances), rotating shifts at work, etc. Even the "happy stress" of trying to conceive can sometimes interfere with regular ovulations.

At age 24, with no other known risks for infertility or partner infertility, women are usually asked to wait 12 months of TTC before undertaking a more extensive fertility evaluation. In your case, since it has been six months without a flow it is time to return to your GYN or clinic for follow up. You may be given a short course of progesterone to make any built up lining inside the uterus shed. At that time you can also ask if they checked the simple blood tests for low thyroid or elevated prolactin (a pituitary gland hormone).

Hope your cycles return as abruptly as they disappeared and you conceive promptly.

Yours,
Jane
