Hi, I have a question, my daughter is 17 years old she unfortunately ggets very bad menstrual cramps, this week when she got it, her pain was so strong that she passed out.
I got so scared, I called my gyne and she scared me even more, by saying that's not a good sign, and that she needs to be seen by a neurologist. I was told that this is very common? has anyone suffered from this? I just hope and pray to God, that it's nothing serious. She's a very petite girl she's only about 100 pounds. Please help!!

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear BetzyBb: I have seen women become faint with pain during IUD insertions, biopsies of the uterine lining, and other types of GYN pain, fear, or trauma. The most common cause is a vaso-vagal reaction. Here is more information about this from the Mayo Clinic website:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/vasovagal-syncope/DS00806

Of course if your GYN suggest she be seen by a neurologist to rule out epilepsy, or other more concerning causes, that should be done. Once the cause is established to be a vaso-vagal then the treatment should be to reduce the severe pain of your daughter's menstrual cramps. That is something your GYN should be able to treat with a variety of medication options.

Yours,
Jane

Just curious, Jane...is vasovagal syncope also the culprit when people suddenly feel faint during blood donation, or is that something else?

Dear wellnessmom: A fear/fright can prompt a "vagal" response, as can a variety of pain stimuli.
